The main characters simply have an Odyssey/Immram voyage in the ocean, stopping at several islands, meeting sea creatures & monsters. And a vicious sea demon is on their trail (serving as a villainous Poseidon figure)
I will stick with past tense in my writing, unless I were to write dual timeline books, like TJR's Atmosphere, for example. Then I'd likely be more inclined to use a mix, but I won't write a book in present tense otherwise.
I use past tense 99% of the time. Only exception I have is Helena's narration in Vitrified. When she's close to waking back up or in a wakened state back in Tey 'Ra 'Tah her narration is present tense.
I usually use past tense.
After reading Red Rising, I decided to try present tense for Shadow Cursed and liked how it changed the flow of the story. The narrator isn't keeping things from the reader, he doesn't know either.
I’m the same way. I primarily use past tense, first person. I have one story that’s past tense third person, but I definitely have a preference for past tense. 😬
Writers, do you use the same tense all the time or does it depend on the story? I usually use past tense because every time I use present, it just sounds awkward #writingq #WritingCommunity

That's exactly what my wip (The Wild Family) is about. Bethany's journey is about acknowledging & embracing her bisexuality (& her autism) while on a mission to rescue her adopted family.

The ocean of the Nequinum world gets explored in an Odyssey voyage sort of way
Even underwater gets explored with its kelp forests, grottoes, undersea cities, & sunken ships.

The sheer joy of it. I want to be published, but that doesn’t motivate me very well.
My brain needs to be doing something creative. If I weren't writing I'd be miserable, it's that simple.
