(1/) Back in 2024, we celebrated 30 years of the Breeding Bird Survey. Gwyn Williams was one of just over 100 dedicated volunteers who surveyed a BBS square each year since the survey began. Have a read of his story: www.bto.org/get-involved... @btobirds.bsky.social #Ornithology

I've kept track of every single UK bird I've managed to identify and I'd like to try to paint them all. These are the finches I have seen so far.

Whilst this isn't my usual style, I'm having fun experimenting!

he world’s loudest birds squawk as loud as a jackhammer. The calls of the bare-throated bellbird & red-legged seriema can exceed 120 decibels. www.popsci.com/environment/... #biology #ornithology #palaeontology #science #SciChat

I was privileged to see two yellow eyed penguins in the Otago area way back in 2005. Didn’t think that the population numbers would get this bad so quickly 😢

Time for a #WeBSSpeciesSpotlight✨

Today we have the gorgeous Shelduck. These chunky, charismatic birds are usually seen on estuaries and coastal marshes, and they nest in burrows!

To learn more about Shelducks and other WeBS species, visit BirdFacts➡️www.bto.org/birdfacts

#Ornithology #UKBirding

A photo of a shelduck with latin name Tadorna tadorna, with labels showing a dark green head, a bright red bill (males have a fleshy bump at the base of the bill), a white body with black patches, and a chestnut brown band around the body. Their seasonality is present throughout the year, peaking during winter and spring migration. Weight is 1250g. Eggs are 8-10. Diet is small invertebrates, and some vegetation and seeds. Habitats are estuarine, marine and intertidal, and wetland.

1/🧵

I'm about #BOUasm26 today discussing how species traits (temperature niche position, habitat selectivity, urban association) shape avian populations.

In my study system in North Carolina, we've been monitoring bird populations with a mini breeding bird survey since 1999.

#ornithology #Ecology

The three questions I will address are: 1. How are bird populations changing in this landscape? 2. How are species responding to urbanization in the short and long term? 3. Is this landscape-population change relationship shaped by species traits?

Quiet backyard feeders in the Sonoran Desert? Our white-winged doves have already left for Mexico! 🕊️🌵
But October brings new arrivals. Keep an eye out for:

Standing alone in bright green seaweed, a great blue heron stares off to the right. Behind this tall bird, blue water from a channel off the ocean flows with a choppy surface. A bar of bright tan-colored sand on the other side creates a new layer of color behind the bird's head. Pale blue sky sits at the top of the frame.
