1/🧵

I'm about #BOUasm26 today discussing how species traits (temperature niche position, habitat selectivity, urban association) shape avian populations.

In my study system in North Carolina, we've been monitoring bird populations with a mini breeding bird survey since 1999.

#ornithology #Ecology

The three questions I will address are: 1. How are bird populations changing in this landscape? 2. How are species responding to urbanization in the short and long term? 3. Is this landscape-population change relationship shaped by species traits?

1/🧵 Today I’m at #BOUasm26, engaging with colleagues on predicting the future of #avian #biodiversity. Recently in my own work I asked, how do we predict the movements of #birds in the world’s ever-growing cities? #ornithology

@bou.org.ukSep 29, 2026, 11:25 AM

We‘re progressing session 2 with three LIGHTNING ⚡️ talks from Celestine Adelmant, Sienna Rattigan, and Mark Eddowes. #BOUasm26 #ornithology

We‘ll be moving onto the BOU Godman Salvin Prize presentation shortly.

1/6 #boreal bird communities of the future may not simply have fewer species—they may have different species. We explored how climate change, wildfire & forest harvesting could reorganize bird communities across Québec’s boreal forest by 2100. #BOUasm26 #ornithology #ecology #conservation

#BOUasm26 MJE6/6 But more strikingly, nest spatial distribution shows that arrival constrained #Redstart nest only in cooler areas, in accordance with settlement informed by #phenology. Active territory choice drives localised decline rather than indiscriminate settlement and #trophicmismatch.

@markeddowes.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 11:15 AM

#BOUasm26 MJE5/6 Their spatial and temporal first egg date temperature plasticity of ~5 days/°C shows #Redstart have acute sensitivity to local #phenology, just as strong as that shown by resident tits, but with average lay date around a week later.

@markeddowes.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 11:15 AM

#BOUasm26 MJE4/6 Next on to my Derbyshire nest box study site where the range of elevations and southerly aspects provides a range of temperatures, measured at the nest site level using i-Button thermochrons - an ideal place to study the latter mechanism at a fine scale for the #Redstart.

@markeddowes.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 11:15 AM

#BOUasm26 MJE3/6 Migrant decline is well-covered in the literature - #trophicmismatch proposed as a mechanism in arrival date constrained philopatric migrants. But there is an alternative mechanism – #phenology-related reduced settlement at asynchronous sites and range shift.

@markeddowes.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 11:15 AM

#BOUasm26 MJE2/6 Then the county atlas project, showing passerine migrant #birds disappearing from the Cheshire plain but hanging on or expanding in the hills above Macclesfield, best exemplified by Willow Warbler. Range shift at the local level, up the elevational gradient to later springs.
