Mr. Milton Rails (he/they), a short, fat, Black elder with graying hair and sideburns, dressed in a snappy suit and blue Victorian style overcoat, is a conductor: he carries a sleek black wooden cane that transforms into a huge scythe, and his job is to keep the ghost trains on the appropriate tracks so they don’t careen into the living world and wreck havoc. Superpowers are incredible agility, flight, and immortality. Mr. Rails one day rescues a nonbinary teenager named Sparks who can also see the ghost trains and is searching for their lost sister, who was kidnapped by a ghostly passenger. A titanic shadow monster, the Time Reaper, is looming over Chicago, and Mr. Rails feels ill equipped to do the job of both shepherding the trains and protecting the world from the Time Reaper. Sparks wants to help, even if it means postponing their search for their sister, so Mr. Rails sends them to infiltrate a private college where rumors of sorcerery among the football team and corruption in the faculty are putting everyone’s grades in jeopardy.While sneaking through the labyrinthine school/hotel “squirrel style” (I.e. running dashes, huge leaps, and flying acrobatics) Sparks uncovers a conspiracy to deny rental assistance and food to a janitor/tech worker named Mr. Yu, and a wider plot to turn all low income students into “ghost parts” to make a giant battery to power the school for free, which would give all the electric bill funds to the dean (who was in league with the Time Reaper, of course). Sparks has to infiltrate a fraternity party in disguise to get evidence the football captain (who insists “don’t google me!” because of his crimes and also because he’s a vampire) is in league with the dean, but before they can, an alert comes in from the resistance movement (which Mr. Rails also helps with and Sparks just joined) that automatons automobiles are attacking people downtown and the local superheroes are occupied with bigger threats. Sparks goes ricocheting (“squirrel style”) through the streets and across buildings and is getting to the battle zone when a ghost appears to tell them their sister is tying to escape the engine room and they need to hurry. Torn over stopping the killer automobiles and using this opportunity to find their sister, Sparks loses momentum and crashes to the ground, landing inside a huge industrial shopping center where giant lanky shift workers, who are zombies being controlled by the ghost trains, are hunting shoppers. Sparks calls for Mr. Rails to aid them as they grab a bunch of tools from one of the aisles and use a rolling ladder as a shield to escape a zombie attack and rush to defend the shoppers (who are ignoring all the speaker PA announcements to leave the building).
