We are born with a tabula rasa, a mental blank slate, because we have repressed out of our consciousness (we have created an unconscious) all that we are and could be if we had not suppressed, re- pressed, and forgotten who we are. So that, d) Onto this blank slate we pour all the necessary learnings we need to survive; we do this through a process of parenting. However, unlike the mind sharing of other planetmates, we are only going to get any learnings we do as funneled through an even more narrowed consciousness, one even more split from Divinity or the mind we share in common with the Universe. And that more narrowed consciousness is that of our caregivers, one’s parents, usually. Thus, e) Culture — which is the accumulated, infinitely varied, and unavoidably flawed understandings of how to behave and survive in the world, developed over time, and different in every society — steps in where mind sharing ... what we disrespectfully call instinct ... should be.

INTRODUCTION Page 18 Sexual and Pleasure Repression Hugely important amid the thought-and-emotion control was that of sexual behavior. Religion and the Controllers embraced the notion that even sexuality was a source of uninhibited expression of emotion, outside the control of the elite, so sexuality became demonized ... at least for the lowly. Sexuality was both a reminder of our erstwhile belongingness in Nature as well as it was a powerful source of potential defiance, thus requiring repression. The quality of life of the dominated, including love, was more than just not important to the Controllers, which was true. On a level so fundamental it could not even be seen, the personal feelings, motivations, and individual ends of those lower in status got in the way of the ends the Controllers had in mind. Human feeling, intention, and choice were thought to be arenas designated only for them. Those who controlled deemed themselves risen to the heavens, at times thinking they were gods, at times demanding they be thought of that way. In this scheme, the subdued and the server classes were viewed as no more than props in the dramas the elite would concoct. They were not more important, often even less so, than the planetmates who had earlier been enslaved, similarly to be used at will by humanity.

Now, think about humans’ mother-infant interaction. Compare the two. When we observe human mothering, let us say the mother is breast or bottle feeding her child, you might see the mother and baby looking deeply and for prolonged periods into each other’s faces. The same kind of intense interaction is characteristic of play times be- tween the two. Each is fully attentive to the nuances of facial expressions and sound emitted by the other. This is a lengthy inten- sive education for human infants in the finer points of facial expression. The mother might be making sounds, cooing, using words and talking, perhaps singing or humming in order to soothe and pacify. Lay that alongside what we normally see in the mother-infant interaction of our primate relatives. Let us take, for example, chimps and gorillas. In this message, they bring not just a wake-up call, a warning, and understanding of ourselves that goes beyond what we know. They bring also the way back, to sanity, to safety, in that they tell us not only how we’ve gone wrong, but also how we once had gone right and could once again. You Ain’t Born Typical The planetmates show us where we foolishly rebelled against a beneficent Universe, or God; and chose instead to go it alone, to reject the gift of the “given way” of happiness. We did such a stupid thing being fooled by our hubris, which actually arose out of a kind of inferiority complex we carried from birth, being only half-borns compared to all other species.

This points to a provocative inquiry into the nature of Reality beyond the confines of physical life, beyond the templates laid down in us of early, prenatal, and cellular human experience ... beyond the “seven Veils.” In Dance of the Seven Veils, this work laid out in three books, I describe how our personalities, and especially our basic mythologies, theologies, and beliefs, are laid down in us through our earliest experiences — adolescence, infancy, birth, the womb, and cellular existence, with each stage of development incorporating and reframing the conceptualizations previous.

Identity in Relationship What differentiates marriage to paternal kin from other types of marriage, and how are the differences evaluated? For most, the advantages do not have to do with sexual excitement. Indeed, some older men complained that the "marital" (sexual) side of such marriages was limited. As one polygynously married man put it, "My other wives are better with me personally," although he went on to explain that he nevertheless preferred his cousin-wife, for reasons to be enumerated below. Certain young men complained that the trouble with marrying a cousin was that she was like a sister.2 An unmarried man mused, "You won't feel like talking and flirting. And she knows everything about you, where you go, who you see." He implied that she would therefore not be in awe of her husband, reducing the power differen-tial. Girls occasionally voiced a wish to see something, new by marrying an outsider, since then they would leave the camp. They did not talk (at least to me) about the sexual aspect of marriage._
