This #NotesandRecords special issue demonstrates the complexity of plant studies, as early modern scholars conceived plants not only as a subject of botanical studies, but also as a laboratory object that mediates the study of nature: royalsocietypublishing.org/rsnr/issue/7... #HistSci #HistSTM

He dug sixty-five rooms by hand. He grew an orchard twenty-two feet underground. He set an aquarium into the ceiling so he could watch his dinner swim overhead. Baldassare Forestiere, the immigrant who spent forty years going down.

The Man Who Went Down

Happy birthday to #neuroscientist Hendrik Van der Loos (1929-1993) shown in my #linocut with his discovery (along with medical student Thomas Woolsey), of the barrel cortex, along with the mouse head & whiskers linked directly to it. 🧪🐡🧠 #histsci #histmed

Some species of rodents have a region of

linocut print on 11” x 14” cream coloured washi paper of Hendrik van der Loos in blue ink with diagrams of a mouse head and barrel cortex. The line drawing style mouse head is in a raspberry red and includes the shape of its brain and dots representing the barrel cortex. Like van der Loos it is at 3/4 and placed so that its eyes are at his eye-line. Its whiskers lead to a array of spots on its snout in a gradient of blue to red with a green strip, to match the barrel cortex diagram above. The barrel cortex above van der Loos’ head looks like five rows of obloid shapes in a gradient of red to blue with a final offset top column in green.

If you'd like to get nerdy today, and I mean really nerdy, you would be hard pressed to do better than this @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social History of Science podcast episode about the new book "Projecting Knowledge: The Optical Lantern and Science Communication, 1880s-1940s" (Brepols). #HistSci

I turned up at Waterstones in Worthing to sign some new stock of QUEER ORIGINS and was absolutely bowled over to be greeted by this in prime position in the shop window! It's so uplifting when booksellers get behind one's book. 💜🌈📚🦋🗃️

Photo taken from outside a shop window. There's a copy of Darwin and the Queer Origins of Life: A History of Sex and Science by Ross Brooks displayed upright. Next to it is some text about the book in a wooden frame. It reads: 'Darwin and the Queer Origins of Life' 'Dr Ross Brooks' 'What did Darwin and Linnaeus really think about sex? In this iconoclastic history, Brooks shows how queerness was at the heart of evolutionists’ thinking about the natural world. From hermaphroditic slugs and sex-changing birds to male pigeon lactation, pregnant male seahorses, and bisexual pigs, Darwin and his fellow naturalists were privately in awe of nature’s sexual diversity. These encounters fundamentally shaped their understanding of plants, animals, and humans, even if they were never fully acknowledged in their published writings. Brooks radically exposes us to the hidden queerness of Georgian and Victorian science—and shows how nature has always been more sexually diverse than we’ve been told.'

This extraordinary image was created by reprocessing & merging 16 frames from Voyager 1's flyby of Jupiter in 1979.

Just right of center, you can see the Great Red Spot, a huge storm system.

Voyager 1 view of Jupiter. Banded clouds wrap the planet in beige, cream & pale brown. Just right of center sits the Great Red Spot, an oval storm flushed orange-red. Lower left, the bright disk of Europa is visible. Upper right, a round dark patch marks Io’s shadow on the cloud tops.
