📚 When the Biodiversity Heritage Library faced an uncertain future in 2025, the global community stepped up. Now, celebrating 20 years as an independent consortium, BHL is stronger than ever.

🎤 Thank you to Nicole Kearney for sharing this inspiring journey at #TDWG2026!

Let me highly recommend the Biodiversity Heritage Library as another resource, particularly for weird natural history images - here’s a wild person-mantis from around 1715, for example:

The Biodiversity Heritage Library, for illustrations of animals, plants, and funguses in the public domain. This is where I go if I want a fairly high resolution scan from a book or journal.

Oh come on, I think. How can I dig up details on the morphology of E. tunetanus, a species described in 1900, and whose holotype is in Hungary? This is a short paper not a revision.

Except... should I check... yep, @biodivlibrary.bsky.social has the original description.

Beautiful plate, grim subject: parasitic castration of bees by Stylops, a genus of twisted-wing parasites. It accompanies French zoologist Jean Pérez's 1886 description of the phenomenon. 🐝🗃️

🐦🐊 For #PloverAppreciationDay, a tale from BHL.

This “Egyptian Plover & Crocodile” illustrates the ancient story that plovers entered crocodiles’ mouths to eat leeches & insects. The book called the tale “strictly true.” Modern evidence disagrees. 📚 🧪

Those faces. 🥺

BHL made it through its transition to independence, but we only have secure funding only through 2027.

Monthly donations help build the reliable support needed to keep BHL free and open beyond that. 🧪 📚️ 🌱
