Tok nodded without looking at her. It gave him no satisfaction that she was the third person to dissuade him from worrying about what could have been, but the message had finally been received. Perhaps it was because she was the last person that he expected to be so understanding about it. Plopping down next to Otalia, Tok leaned back and braced himself with
his arms behind his back.

“I don’t want to lose.”

“Unfortunately, that isn’t really up to you though... is it?”

“Not. At. All.”

“Well, I hope that you feel better. You have a duel to prepare for.”

Tokonus sat up quickly, his body growing tense with realization. In only a few hours he was meant to face [REDACTED] in battle. He needed to renew his focus and shore up his feelings. His opponents would not offer him sympathy, and he could not allow himself to be defeated.

“Perhaps this is one I need... maybe hitting someone will be the remedy I require."

Another flash of lightning zipped by, cutting Othelia’s thought short. Without hesitation she closed her eyes, clenched her fist and tensed. This defense did nothing to protect her from the drum of another roll of thunder. Tokonus could not allow himself to pout while she sat there with
him clearly uncomfortable.

“Othelia, I don’t mean to meddle... but are... are you afraid of the thunder?”

For a time, Othelia did not answer him, instead turning her body away as if in shame. Tokonus did not pry further. If she was not interested in speaking on this, then it was not for him to mind.

“Is it that obvious," Othelia inquired, finally allowing herself to relax.

“Whether it is or isn’t doesn’t really matter. Fear is not something to be ashamed of. Any person who claims to be fearless is a liar or a fool and I am not sure which is worse.”

“Funny..." Othelia said with a soft chuckle. “I... I only came here because I thought you wouldn’t care. I am afraid of thunder, but I don’t trust the others here to know it. Everyone around us... they're always looking for a weakness – a way in. I guess I thought that, of anyone, you would ignore me at best, and I wouldn’t have to be alone.”

When I use a word that gets flagged by the spell or grammar checker, and the spelling and usage is correct, I smile, because that means few write as I do.

ProWritingAid's simpering emails do nothing for me. But confusing the checkers?

Alright children. Do you know the first thing you will need to secure when you find yourself in a survival situation? Food? Nah, not that. Water? Important to be sure, but that ain’t it either. If you guessed shelter, then you can pat yourself on the back and lock in because for a town full of buildings, finding a comfortable spot was a bitch!

But Duggy, I can hear you start, why not try to reinforce your apartment? Well, if you must know, that place was a deathtrap. With a fence and the familiarity of my living space, I didn’t quite feel comfortable abandoning the place initially. After two attacks right outside my door, I realized that it wasn’t the best place to be. There wasn’t any practical way to defend it, and there wasn’t another means of escape if I got cornered. That was ignoring the lack of storage, space, or entertainment – listen if I was going to be alone, I needed something to keep my sanity intact.

So off to the dusty roads I went, making sure to keep my weight on the balls of my feet and my head on a swivel while I searched. Many places were skipped without a second glance, and there were a ton more that I didn’t even pretend to take a peek at.

Houses, other apartments, grocery stores, and restaurants were all off the table. They would be the first place people decided to huddle up, and that meant they would be hotspots for the stalker patrols. Next off the list was the mall, pawn shops, and shopping centers – especially, especially the mall – because they would be looter heaven. Staggering into one of those was like putting a giant beacon up that said; ‘Yo, free eats my G’. Not a genius, but I wouldn’t be falling
for that shit anytime soon.
