Connecticut's mysterious "JB-55" burial contained a man whose bones had apparently been rearranged after death, possibly as an anti-vampire measure. Researchers later used DNA and genealogy to identify him as likely John Barber, a 19th-century farmer. #WyrdWednesday

Before the cape came the Slavic upir.
A suicide or the first plague victim might rise and waste away its own kin. Unearth it. Stake it. Burn it.

“Vampire” entered English in the 1700s.

Today I’m finishing off Weird Woods

Includes great stories from Edith Nesbit (Man-Size in Marble), E. F. Benson (The Man Who Went Too Far) and Arthur Machen (N)

One tale (An Old Thorn) set on the Wiltshire Downs, is intro’ed as a dark twist on the Glastonbury Thorn legend

Come, tell tales of the living dead. In Haitian lore, a bokor may bind a soul or body to labour. The Haitian zonbi (zombie) terror is a stolen will, echoing plantation bondage.
In some tales, salt wakes the bound dead.

A #Draugr is one of the Norse living dead—a #revenant guarding treasure buried with its corpse. With supernatural strength and, in some tales, the power to take animal form, it makes grave-robbing a deadly gamble. 🪙💀

One of the few examples of a walking mummy in Egyptian folklore is when the sorcerer hero Setne breaks into the tomb of Prince Naneferkaptah to steal the magical Book of Thoth. The Book's power lets Naneferkaptah's spirit animate his own corpse to confront the grave robber.

In the 12th century, William of Newburgh recorded a #revenant at Anantis Castle, often linked to Alnwick. By night, it wandered, spreading pestilence.

Dug from its grave, its corpse was swollen with blood. The living dead… before Dracula. ⚰️
