Alaskan waters are one of the least-explored areas in the U.S.

But where researchers have gone, theyโ€™ve found unique ecosystems like this fragile deep-sea octopus nursery.

Happy #WorldOctopusDay! A year ago today I started my Octopolis Tarot deck. Here are some of the pieces that I've drawn since that I'm most proud of.

Strength by SS Julian, Digital Art. An octopus forces open the jaws of a moray eels as the two crash through a coral reef. A frightened frogfish flees in fear in the foreground. The Lovers by SS Julian, Digital Art. Two octopuses fall into each others arms in the bright light of a new day and a new world. As they draw near one another, their skin colors and patterns interweave with one another. The sun watches over their union in a coral bed filled with the crackle and burst of spawning polyps. Staved into the sandy bed are two shell-tipped spears. A woven net lies strewn about, one hooked end of which is held in the arm of the female octopus. The Hermit by SS Julian Digital art. An octopus sits ensconced in a dark blue cave, curled up against the surfaces and walls. She cradles a clutch of golden eggs, and blows air through them with her funnel. She holds a branch of bioluminescent coral in one arm, while her other arms commune with themselves, each other, or her eggs. The Empress by SS Julian Digital art. An orange octopus, reclines within her throne of fan coral and a corallimorph cushion. To one side she grasps a staghorn coral staff, and on the other a sad dollar shield. Within her web rest many developing eggs. Around her is wrapped a domesticated moray eel. All along her mantle crawl commensal crustaceans and molluscs. Her pattern is complex and enigmatic, evoking radial hydrozoans or flowers.

I didn't know there was a World Octopus day! Here's a sketch I made in July of the Graneledone octopus, a suspected new species in the Trinidad & Tobago deep sea expedition! #octopus #worldoctopusday #octopusart

A Graneledone octopus, a suspected new species, moves across the seafloor during a deep-sea ocean expedition off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago. This species was first observed during an expedition Dr. Diva Amon (SpeSeas) participated in 2014, but was not confirmed or collected until this mission. Researchers made dozens of other discoveries on the trip, including at least 20 suspected new species, three of which may be new genera. The Illustrated Police News on this #WorldOctopusDay
#steampunk

The image is of the front page of the Illustrated Police News, Saturday, October 17, 1896. The headline is "Alarminf experience of fair bathers who are attacked by an octopus". There are four women in the surf, in (of course) period bathing atire. One of the women, sitting in the water, has an octopus grasping at her legs. It doesn't look much like an octopus as the eyes are large and round and the face is somewhat simian. It doesn't look so much as attacking as a tentative hug. The woman being "attacked" does not appear terribly frightened but has a somewhat bemused look on her face. A sort of WTF.

For #WorldOctopusDay a scene of the so-called 'Fish Mosaic' discovered in the 'House of the Faun' in Pompeii, Italy.
It dates back to the 2nd century BC and depicts a combat between an octopus and a lobster in astonishing detail.

It's a Glass Octopus (Vitreledonella richardi), one of my fave cephalopods. They're rare, live in the deep ocean and are spectacular. I decided to sketch one! It's done by hand in blue mechanical pencil lead and Koo-i-Noor colored pencils, a q tip & alcohol!
#WorldOctopusDay #GlassOctopus

A sketchpad : In the center is an illustration of a Glass Octopus drawn in blue, orange and yellow. To the left is a Koo-i-noor colored pencil in blue, a MONO zero eraser, & blue Pentel mechanical pencil sticks. To the right is a bottle of alcohol, a q tip (also blue coincidentally), and a yellow mechanical pencil with blue lead inside.
I rubbed the color with alcohol on a cotton swab to give it a smoother appearance here and there.
