From the archive for Janet McNeill, #BornOnThisDay in 1907, my thoughts on TEA AT FOUR O'CLOCK.
A tragic story of familial obligations, ulterior motives and longstanding guilt. Brilliantly observed, it's also ideal for #SpinsterSeptember #BookSky 💙📚

Miss Flavia Grundy. Rumoured (Emma’s mother had told her) that Miss G. had once written a romantic historical novel, but it was never spoken of. A rather sad character. London high-church goer dumped in the country... #BookSky 💙📚 #SpinsterSeptember
It was indeed. I hope you enjoy it!
Perfect timing for @pear-jelly.bsky.social’s #SpinsterSeptember!
Today on the blog, a post for #SpinsterSeptember hosted by @pear-jelly.bsky.social “Being unmarried has its own status.” (Barbara Pym, The Sweet Dove Died) madamebibilophilerecommends.co.uk/2026/09/13/b...
The start of school is such a crazy, stressful time. Relaxing with a mystery. In my pajamas. Feels like such a gift. I will get to all the other tasks later. Haven’t even had time to get to my #spinsterseptember books yet.
Following up Twilight Sleep (which was wonderful) with Good Behavior and whoo boy, that first chapter! Not what I expected.
New on the blog today, my thoughts on A FEW GREEN LEAVES by Barbara Pym.
A charming, beautifully observed novel, laced with Pym's trademark gentle humour & quiet insights into the social dynamics of village life. A delightful read for #SpinsterSeptember! 💙📚
I'm reading Julie Klassen's The Ladies of Ivy Cottage, and I just learned that the socially awkward, spooky old spinster who lives beyond town and makes soap in a cauldron in her yard has an indoor cat. I think I've found another favorite fictional spinster...

For #SpinsterSeptember, several pages in with the memoir Plant Dreaming Deep, my first May Sarton apart from some poems. She starts with the installation of an ancestor’s portrait in her home, when at fifty four she’s the last of her family. Any startings or finishings for #ThursdayBookChat?
📚💙
Just starting High Rising by Angela Thirkel, 1933, for #SpinsterSeptember only to find there are two spinsters in this delightful book, the first of her Barsetshire series. Loving that the main character is a writer of ‘good bad books’ too 💙📚

Read for #SpinsterSeptember, this 1921 debut novel of the evolving relationship between a 46-year-old spinster seamstress and a disenchanted younger man during the final year of the Great War. Set in a thinly disguised #Montreal.

New on the blog today, my thoughts on WISH HER SAFE AT HOME by Stephen Benatar.
A remarkable, deeply unsettling novel featuring one of the best depictions of the inner life of an unstable woman I’ve encountered in fiction. Unforgettable! #SpinsterSeptember
Next up for #spinsterseptember: Twilight Sleep by Edith Wharton as recommended by @radzpandit.bsky.social
