#Spectember Day16 Disaster Profiteer
In the wake of the asteroid impact mammals had an explosive radiation, resulting in lineages we know today & slightly strange sidebranches. The Underbiters are rodent-like mammals who enlarged their bottom rather than top incisors to better carve into nuts & bark

#spectember Day15 Family Feud
After evolving separately for a few million years the Vegan Stoat and Face-eating weasel collide when climates and habitats shift. Now the nimble, ferocious, & deadly weasel hunts its much more docile stoat cousin.

These salamander decendents are opportunisitc onnivores, & also get a substantial amount of their energy needs from the chlorophyll in their semi-transparent skin. Unlike species that cultivate algae symbiotes, Amphoclores grow chlorophyll as one of their tissues.

#spectember Day12 Obsession
The moneky' pet tarantula are a curious species of spider who form strong relationships with saki monkeys where they petrol their fur for bugs. Different sub-species prefer different species, though white-faced sakis are sought out by many.

#spectember Day11 the Hotspring Skaters are a lineage of pond skimmers who evolved to inhabit extreme hot water environments, such as the cool to medium hot pools in Yellowstone. Their specialized hairs and constant quick movements keep them from overheating.

#spectember Day10 The Long Game
Auditor beetles bore into buried nuts, where they grow into their final larval form and wait for a wildfire to pass. Once the fire has scorched the local forest, they rapidly pupate and emerge to feast on the charred wood.

#spectember Day 9 Safe Haven
The subterranean monster, a distant dependent of the gila monster, managed to survive the worst of the global warming spikes thanks to its home in the deep caves of what used to be Nevada. These blind & pale lizards are top predators of their environment.

Spectember 2026 Day 10: Cavern Crown

The Long Game

For my Drecel project, a species of long-lived fungi that grows tall, pronged structures that support squirts, spore bearing fruiting body. It acts as the backbone for the underground Mycoforest ecosystem.

#spectember #specevo

Beneath the Roof of Drecel, lies a network of massive caves and caverns. Accessible through several groundwaterways, cave-ins, and tunnels, these caverns form their own ecosystem that offers shelter and new opportunity for surface dwellers. The backbone of this ecosystem, the mycoforest, is the Cave Crown, tall colonies made up of chitinous hyphae that grow slowly in tall, pronged structures. For the first few decades of life, this fungus remains an unassuming mold creeping along the cave floor, feeding off guano and detritus. Once a colony reaches 50 years of age and roughly 10 meters in diameter, the fungus begins to grow upward, inch by inch each year into small irregular cones. Successive asexual generations of hyphae grow atop their dead, hardened ancestors. This can go on for centuries until the Crown is over 2 meters tall and finally it is ready to have sex. Mature Crowns will produce several large, sugary fruiting bodies known as squirts. The squirts have a dual purpose: contain and protect spores and attract large animals to eat the squirt, disperse the spores, and hopefully poop nearby, further sustaining the parent Crown. When the spores from unrelated colonies come in contact, they fuse into a child diploid Crown which will form into its own new colony.

I brought back the mycoforest! This was an ecosystem that I hinted at way back when then retconned but now we’re bringing it back.

#spectember day 8 Meccha Chameleon
A progenitor of the first true fruit-eater lineage Jeholornis was the omnivorous Protojeholornis pictor. They consumed seeds and a bit of fruit in the cretaceous fall to enrich their feathers with carotenoids for fall foliage camouflage.

Spectember 2026 Day 7: Lakyr

Land Whale

For my Drecel project, a myrmecophagous ambulocetid whale with an aggressive demeanor like a living wildfire. \

Day 7: Land Whale

For my Drecel project.

Drecel has only one family of true whales. A primitive lineage that is still furred and four-limbed the ambulocetidae. Most have remained basal in appearance, filling out semi-aquatic predator niches across the temperate mainland, coastlines, and remote islands. In plain tongue they are called otter whales but to the basilisk, they are morslin (translates to worm-like death). But another bizarre beast known to the basilisk of the Western Steppe and Ikon Desert as the Lakyr (grass-fire) also belongs to this clade.

Lakyrs are a myrmecophagous species, convergent in adaptations with earthly mammals like aardvarks and anteaters. Powerful limbs and sharp claws, quite unlike their amphibious kin, allow them to dig down into the dusty earth after ant colonies or into the tall land-spires of micklets (eusocial mothdeer). Due to their semi-aquatic ancestry, their nostrils are located on the top and middle of the skull. In order to accommodate their diet, it is the snout that is greatly reduced while the rest of the skull is extended. The long sticky tongue is rooted at the back of the jaw and coils down in the throat when not in use. It can expertly probe the tunnels, lapping up hundreds of insects and larvae at a time. Lakyr have developed an immunity to the stings and bites of their prey.

#spectember day2 "Incredibly Deadly Viper"
My take on this not very dangerous member of a dangerous group is a passive filter-feeding crocodile. Why work hard for a mean when your mouth just looks like a nice refuge for tiny morsals? Name meaning "comb tooth".
