The hookfang boar, a piscivorous pig from the Hyne's Inheritance project!

#pig #boar #creaturedesign #specevo #speculativeevolution #specbio

The Eastern Riverlands refers to a large region of central Arion east to the Chrysa Ring and north of the Still Sea. Thousands of years ago, this expanse of low-lying grassland and fluvial plains became the first place to be colonized by the hyne. These horse people took residence in the dryer uplands where their preferred domesticated crops could grow. The sprawling rivers and wetlands between their hilltop villages are known as dangerous borderlands home to terribly large alligators, fish, and boar.

The hooktusk boar is a species of large piscivorous swine. Specialized to wade into shallow water and catch fish akin to a giant piggy heron, hooktusks actually pose little danger to the hyne. While taller and certainly capable of dispatching large prey, these boars have long narrow jaws with a weak bite strength meant to clasp down on fish. The eponymous hooked tusks prevent fish from slipping out forward while sharpened molars slice into scaly flesh. They could give a hyne a nasty bloody bite but are highly uninclined to do so. The dark pelt aids them in blending in at night, when they prefer to be active. Their large ears alert them to the faint splashing of fish below the water. All four of their toes tough the ground and are connected by webbing. They are poor swimmers so instead use this to prevent them from sinking into soft mud and silt. Long thin legs allow them to keep much of their body out of the water, appearing as thin trunks or branches to their prey.

This species lives in sprawling gregarious groups that remain amicable throughout the year. Mature boars will challenge one another for mating rights each autumn but this takes the form of bellowing oinks and flashing tusks. Rarely do they inflict it on one another, reserving it for their prey or the odd onlooker.

Beast Fables - Enteledont

A reward that doubles as something for Weretober! This fellow transforms into a speculative enteledont, one that is more sociable and herbivorous than say, Daeodon. Still armed with a nasty bite.

A collection of some glimpses into the future off my post-apocalypse worldbuilding project, No Man's Land.

By this time most of the remains of human civilization has been swallowed up, but the legacy we humans have via animal life is now naturalized.

New Art!

The Chrysa Captor, a species of large burrowing cat that lives alongside the hyne.

#specevo #speculativeevolution #specbio #cat #feline #creatureart

Captors, a cosmopolitan genus of large cat, have claimed a position as one of Demeter's apex predators 15 million years hence. One of the many diverse descendants of feral cats that once provided pest control upon the agricultural colony, captors are highly specialized ambushers. A low, long body and short powerful bodies allow them to remain close the ground, sometimes exemplified by their tendancy to dig. Most species of captors dig out complex burrows. While solitary hunters, it isn't uncommon for captors to live in small clans and rear kits together. A main chamber provides protection for the young, generally cared for by a revolving door of their mothers, aunts, etc. And long tunnels radiate outward across the territory, exiting out towards common areas where prey are known to pass through like along watering holes, rivers, and plentiful grazing ground. Males and a small percentage of females will disperse from their natal groups to join or form new clans on productive territory.

To facilitate this digging lifestyle, captors have distinctive forepaws. All their claws are large and non-retractable, more like bears. On the forepaw, three are weightbaring while two are held aloft and feature giant semi-opposable sickles used to restrain prey while delivering a quick bite to their prey's cervical spine, paralyzing it. Prominent whiskers and a wide nose allow captors to navigate underground.
