Japan’s 2025 bear crisis, which produced 232 casualties, has been widely attributed to rapid population growth, but a new #ScienceAdvances study shows that a compounding breakdown of the forest’s food supply drove the surge in bear attacks. https://scim.ag/46HG5xB

According to a new #ScienceAdvances study, Earth became significantly less dusty during the 20 years after 2003.

Global atmospheric mineral dust levels fell approximately 10%, a decline which may have slightly amplified recent global warming. https://scim.ag/478fzxq

Earth has been less dusty lately. Dust might seem not great for our health but it does dampen the effect of greenhouse gases by reflecting sunlight—less dust means more rapid warming

Spheres represent the positions of atoms of strontium (violet), antimony (blue), and manganese (purple) in the crystal structure of a semimetal Sr1-y Mn1-z Sb2. The two gold cones touch at the Dirac point and represent the energy and momentum states of conducting electrons. Arrows represent the alignment of magnetic moments. The semimetal represents a class of quantum materials that can be used to create energy-saving electronics. This week’s special issue highlights similar advances in applications driven primarily by the magnetic moment spin exerts on elementary particles.

By imaging six 9th century Abbasid shards with different micro- and nano-analytical methods, researchers show that the composition of the paint influences the reactions between the copper, silver, and iron and determines its optical properties.

Sample of polychrome luster, a ceramic glaze decoration that exploits the optical response of metallic nanoparticles to produce a colorful appearance. Upon firing, silver and copper present in an overpaint diffuse into the glaze and are reduced to metallic nanoparticles. By imaging six 9th-century Abbasid shards with different micro- and nano-analytical methods, Sadurní et al. show that the composition of the paint influences the reactions between the copper, silver, and iron and determines its optical properties. Beyond the historical relevance, this analysis could help develop composite materials based on nanoparticles in glasses and ceramic glazes for photonic applications.
