@thebrambler13.bsky.socialDepends when. Ata in the first volume, plenty. Ata from ages 15-19... a fair bit. Ata as an adult, not much. By the time I reach this story's conclusion she'll have become a mightier warrior than even her father.
Which is a tall order.

@thebrambler13.bsky.socialFor Ata it's page one of my first story, The Knightbane's Prize. She wasn't always a princess by adoption or the page of Cambria's most renowned knight. Bear in mind that she's ten in this first story.
For Sir Corbyn, that's a spoiler.

The Knightbane’s Prize
Storms had flooded the castle courtyard for nearly a week. Despite this, an impressive crowd was gathered around a pillory on top of a small stage. A young girl dangled from her punishment, so short she could not stand while trapped in that wooden block. An older woman handed out spoiled food then invited others to throw it. Between this child and the downpour, none noticed when an old knight paused under a nearby archway.

@thebrambler13.bsky.socialI think Ata probably likes it fine, funnily enough I'm publishing a story from the collection next week which has some spooky shenanigans. I think she handles it all quite well but you'll have to wait and see.
It's called Of Dina & Dan.

@thebrambler13.bsky.socialHi #QueerWritersChat, I'm Bramble!
I babble and ramble about a collection of short stories called Raven & Bear for my Youtube channel. Set in a post-apocalyptic Wales, they follow a girl learning how to be a knight from her adoptive father.

@thebrambler13.bsky.socialI'll let this speak for itself on Sir Myrddin's literal accuracy, but I assure you all it's the same for his metaphorical accuracy as well.
The man's words hit home harder than his arrows at times.

Transcript:
It took them a moment to find Sir Brent, who waited beside a fence which enclosed each contestant and their targets. Among them were knights of Powys, who wore grey tabards decorated with a red dragon. The Order of Vortigern’s heraldry. A group of town guards outnumbered them three to six. Finally, Sir Myrddin stood alone in a bone-white gambeson coat. That loosely-braided beard was flung over one shoulder, away from his unstrung bow.
All except their grandmaster stepped forward a dozen paces and fired three arrows each. Once they were done, this elderly man threaded heavy limbs of yew so fast even Sir Corbyn struggled to follow him. Sir Myrddin’s darts fell swifter than rain as fletching scratched his cheek. A trio of stems grouped upon the target’s gold, though he committed no care to their aim.

@thebrambler13.bsky.socialGoing to hop in because I actually have a chess game in The Wolf Knight. You see The Dream of Rhonabwy, is about a man's fever dream where King Arthur laments the state of Wales while playing "chess".
I'll share an excerpt actually!

Transcript:
“I was wondering actually,” Princess Ceindrych began this match with a patient opener, “P., to d-four. Marrok told me why he wants to be a paladin, but what about you Princess Ata?”
The answer proved unconventional. A pawn pushed to h-five and silence. Thereafter, each established tactic was met by dubious plays. Clouded eyes hurried around their board, then glared at Ata in a bratty fashion. This older princess sighed as she realised it had only been a game of strategy for one of them. Unable to recall where each piece sat, her opponent blushed from embarrassment and hid behind that large cushion again.
They sat in awkward silence, until Ata offered an apology. Muffled by this pillow, Princess Ceindrych explained she had memorized sequences of moves but struggled to recall their board in detail. Small raindrops gathered at the corners of that cloudy stare. Both girls jumped when Sir Garrett cleared his throat, then proposed for this princess to remind herself.
He tapped a rook where it stood, “like so. While your grace studies the board, Princess Ata can answer your question.”
“If I must,” Ata smiled as this girl gingerly felt through their pieces before she explained, “I was quiet because in truth I have little choice, given how the vassals of my mother object to me.”
“That may have changed too,” gloved fingers rubbed the scar hidden under a grass-blue blindfold, “bards sing of your exploits. The druids respect you. So, their heirs regard you with respect.”
“B. to f-six,” Princess Ceindrych interjected with a small smirk when it captured a knight, “many think you may become a worthy steward of the land and a great leader for its people.”

@thebrambler13.bsky.socialI've done lots of writing for Deilenddu Forest. Including this excerpt which describes Sir Corbyn's quest into Y LLoegr for Ata's medicine. I was trying hard to capture the eeriness and how desperate he is.
Bonus A:
Sir Corbyn, yew.
Ata, oak.

Transcript:
His steed trembled over every time-worn divot and wild-torn bump. Then its lamp flickered as a wheel bounced off this motorway, which fell into a storm-whipped sea under darkness. Though blinded, Sir Corbyn rode on at a reckless pace. His pebble-brown eyes pinned open by cold desperation, until they flinched at a sudden light. The old man swerved moments before he was plunged into a tree, saved by this fickle lantern.

@thebrambler13.bsky.socialThe fun part of short stories is that some can be scarier than others. In fact, my next Raven & Bear story has plenty of tricks and treats!

@thebrambler13.bsky.socialRaven & Bear has two options.
For a live action adaptation on S4C, Howard Shore.
For an anime, Joe Hisaishi on it's score and for the OP something similar to Shoko Nakagawa's Sorairo Days for Gurren Lagann.
It'd be peak!
