Happy #FaveLineFriday! This is from A Dragon For Darius, Vol. 4. Darius doesn't always trust Cal.

"Her frown grew, moving from concern in her head to a sudden distrust on her face."

BQ: The furthest Darius has been from home is Sydney, Australia. (9,235 -ish miles)

bonus q: a willow, deceptively bendy and forgiving but shockingly resilient with roots that will bust through foundations to get what they need

(don’t ask me about the zero draft working title where I used tree names as metaphors, just know I’ve thought about this)

How could something that was lost be so heavy—or was it terribly buoyant, vanishing in front
of her, over and over?

There were some helicopters circling. Come on, hadn’t they ever seen a Godzilla movie? Those weren’t going to do much. Just to demonstrate, she reached up and flicked one of course, sending it for a graceless twirl before it righted itself. The others went into a panic, kind of like how insects did when they became aware that something much larger had taken interest in them. Orderly lines of ants scattered as soon as you put your thumb down on them and it was amazing to see how people were just the same, really, when looked at from the correct vantage point.

“I might actually be too tired to teach,” Lawcket admitted, aware that if he were feeling better a joke would definitely get made out of the idea of him teaching his Dad.

If Lawcket were a tree, I think he'd be an apricot

Drisal shrugged, not moving his eyes as he held his wrists out for the shackles, and his heart clicked its heels as he perceived Lord Deran’s inward flinch at the little smile he smiled.

Little writing done this week but hoping to change that later today.

Here is a snip from Kyle looking at old photos from over 20 years ago and dwelling on how much his life has changed.

From a Philosopher Queens side project I may or may not be able to finish. 🤫

#FaveLineFriday

Screenshot of a work-in-progress manuscript.

Kyle pauses on one that strikes him as so far removed from his current life, he has no idea how he got from there to here. It is Heather and him at the Christmas party for the architecture firm he used to work at.
They were still so deeply in love. He still enjoyed his job. Children were an abstract potentiality that he thought might never happen. He even had that silly attempt at a goatee. That party, however, changed the direction of his life.

#FaveLineFriday I'm in edits for #s3, and shared this somewhere else yesterday, but I added this early on this week and I'm really proud of it.

Bonus: Rebecca would be an arizona cypress. Enduring, solid, cold, evergreen.

A snippet from Such Sweet Sorrow by Artemis Quinn. It says:

Beneath the hooks was a large, ornate oval mirror, mounted in an ornate filigree frame that was crafted in a brilliant bronze, green patina showing its age.

Wait a second…

I stepped closer, my eyes narrowing as I stared at the mirror. There was a smudge in the glass that looked like a face. What is that? I tilted my head, trying to change the angle, but the illusion didn’t fade. “No way…”

I twisted to look more fully at the mirror, holding the door with my right hand and leaning in. The face started to define — the right half of an eye, nose, full lips, and the start of an angular jaw beneath curly hair. There was way more detail here than it could be if I had just rubbed against it at some point. As I leaned in, the smudgy eye blinked. I jumped away with a gasp. “Fuck!!”

My heart pounded as I jumped back from the mirror, pressing against the door of the bathroom. I closed my eyes, shaking my head. You’re tired. That’s all.

I finally learned how to use ellipsus for these to look better!

These two are exs who just met again after seven years apart, and the tensions are high. But the walls are starting to come down, slowly. Joking helps.

At the center of the restaurant was a smaller octagonal bar and cooking area, lit up from above by a sign bound with light spirits that flashed the name Dockside Bar and Grill. Zephyr frowned at it from their table. “The names here are terribly uncreative, don’t you think?”

Lyriel stopped turning the Paladin symbol they had found over in her hands to look at them. “What?”

“I’m not saying I could come up with anything better, but at least a little wordplay would be nice. Imagine a restaurant in the city being called Beside-the-Sidewalk. No one would eat there.”

“Maybe,” she said, gray eyes unreadable, “they didn’t want to make waves by being too clever.”

Zephyr blinked in surprise. “Was that a pun?”

She shrugged. “I’m shore I don’t know what you’re talking a-boat.”

“Ah. It a-piers I was mistaken then.”

The two of them stared each other down, daring the other to break first. Ultimately, it was Zephyr who laughed first, but it was due to the slight twitch of Lyriel’s scarred lips that said she could barely keep it together. Sure enough, their laughter brought out her own giggle. Suddenly, they were both eighteen again, joking and laughing on the roof of the orphanage as the airships passed by overhead.

The tightness in Zephyr’s chest eased a little.

But the moment faded, as a calm in the middle of a storm was wont to do, and the silence stretched to uncomfortable lengths before Zephyr could stand it no longer.

This is the last snip I'll share from this novella, as it's fully drafted, now, so I thought I'd go for another longer one. This is Ki'in explaining why someone scared them. It's a theory of magic I might return to, reinterpret for future works...

They shook their head. “It was just the feel of it. You talk about my magic all the time, the way I use it, how it’s strange. She doesn’t use it the same way, she tries, but it’s…” They squirmed and then held out their hand. “The way people use magic today is controlled, precise.” They moved their fingers, twisted their wrist, and produced a spark. “There are edges to it, parameters. It’s clean. I like it. It’s safe. It’s measurable.”

They frowned at the glass in their hand and then purposefully took a sip. “Old magic was—” They cried out in pain and almost dropped their brandy. “I can’t teach it,” they gasped. “I can’t even describe it.”

“Then don’t try!” Devlin was kneeling in front of them, ready to help in anyway he could. They leaned forward and rested their forehead against his. “What I mostly use is something in the middle. It’s more like conducting than drawing. It sweeps instead of moves, folds instead of cuts. I learned—first the old, tightening it, narrowing it, defining it. I can do the new, but—”

They grimaced, and Devlin realized they were still in pain. He claimed their glass and set it aside before lifting them slightly, just enough to insinuate himself beneath them, and pulled them into an embrace. “What can I do,” he asked in a whisper, “to ease the pain?”

“Warmth,” they said as they practically burrowed closer.

Devlin looked over at the fire, and using one of the sweeping motions he’d learned from Ki’in, he lit the fire. They leaned forward and rested their forehead against his. “What I mostly use is something in the middle. They sighed as he pulled a blanket over them.

“She uses magic as one taught the new first,” he guessed, “trying to loosen her grip and embrace the middle.”

They nodded against him. “It’s dangerous. The books are vague. Learning the spells first, extrapolating and experimenting—trying to reverse engineer—there is philosophy, art, emotion—it will go wrong. Eventually, it will go wrong.”

The Kais are hanging out and Talking about science fiction

Can you guess which legally distinct science fiction I’m alluding to?

Bonus: I think Kai Azui would be a mangrove, with roots that can take on the sea

——“Does Kai-Ilen think it’s a crazy plan?”

“Yes!”

—-“Yes.”

——“It’ll work, and I’ve been enjoying science fiction in my off hours, so I also have many ship designs to choose from.”

“He must be joking.”

—-“Of course Kaitani isn’t joking, that Cosmos Patrol show has some really cool designs.”

“Ugh,” I sighed.

Blue took a tablet he had and pulled up a library file on the human science fiction series Cosmos Patrol. The characters wore brightly coloured uniforms, not unlike the ones the UEF wore actually. And then he showed a ship from the series. The main body wasn’t dissimilar to the Comet or the Gattatex: cylindrical, but this ship had a neck like section connected to a frontal disc section and two spindly appendages near the rear connected to two parallel cylinders.
“How does this thing even hold together?”

—-“I think that’s part of the suspension of disbelief,” Blue replied.

“Oh my Stars! He’s going to build a death trap.”

—-“Solar’s worried you’ll build a death trap.”

——“Oh, right, because I’d come all the way out here just for that end result.”

I've done lots of writing for Deilenddu Forest. Including this excerpt which describes Sir Corbyn's quest into Y LLoegr for Ata's medicine. I was trying hard to capture the eeriness and how desperate he is.

Bonus A:
Sir Corbyn, yew.
Ata, oak.

An excerpt from Deilenddu Forest (Raven & Bear: 9) by Bramble.

Transcript:
His steed trembled over every time-worn divot and wild-torn bump. Then its lamp flickered as a wheel bounced off this motorway, which fell into a storm-whipped sea under darkness. Though blinded, Sir Corbyn rode on at a reckless pace. His pebble-brown eyes pinned open by cold desperation, until they flinched at a sudden light. The old man swerved moments before he was plunged into a tree, saved by this fickle lantern.

#FaveLineFriday This week: Mick defuses a situation. (I'm especially proud of the Balmoral boot line. Yes, I may need to remove the word "Balmoral" later, but counterargument: I take the Discworld approach, and it's now the name of the man who invented them.)

#amwriting #writingcommunity

“Eleanor!” he barked as he grabbed her elbow.

She squawked his name and twisted in his grip, but the electricity surrounding her hand fizzled out as he wove her arm back down. Mick had no doubt he hadn’t been immediately electrocuted simply because she knew at once who he was, but that didn’t stop her from spitting several unsavory things in elven that he assumed she was going to apologize for later.

That didn’t matter right now. Mick’s eyes rose to meet Lord Albert’s, and despite the hard heel of a Balmoral boot smacking his shin right then, he put on his best, most cordial smile.

“I am so sorry, my lord,” he said. “Whatever happened, I’m sure it’s not worth a street fight for.”

“Yes it is!” Eleanor hissed. “Mick, let go of me!”
