#observe from Far Worlds, Book Three of the Lonely Ship Saga.

A personal favourite snip! Talyn roundabout asks Marcus out. Would this logic work to get a date with you??

Talyn’s eyes were narrow. She shifted her weight from one hip to the other in a very organic gesture of discomfort. “You do not wish to explore our relationship?”“That’s not what I-…”“Prisoner Marcus, when the nature of a set is uncertain, one means of identifying the qualifying characteristic is to observe the relationship between members of the set,” she said. “I believe we have reached the limit of meaningful observations in our current environment, so we must expand the scope of the experiment. The result of that observation may be one that hints at the possibility of a deeper, more intimate relationship between us. In that case,” she finished, sighing resignedly, “I hope that the knowledge that you have allowed me to better understand how I relate to other beings provides you with some comfort when you die at the hands of Arkay.”He flinched. “You’d be okay with that?”“I am not certain,” she replied plainly. “We have not tested it yet.”

#wipsnips #observe
From my #wip #scifi short story Nom de Guerre.

A rookie soldier joins a unit where everyone earns their name. When the veteran called Widow takes him under her wing before his first combat the rest of the unit starts to keep their distance.

There’s a reason she’s called Widow.

Herrera leaned back against a part of the collapsed wall. "Speaking of names, I guess I owe you the story of why Weston is Widow, huh?"

It took me a second to remember that Herrera had mentioned telling me about Widow's name before the bombardment started.

I shrugged and moved to sit on the ground next to him. Not that I wanted his company but the rubble he was leaning against was giving the only bit of shade within 20 meters and I was starting to cook in my armour. "If you want."
Herrera pulled a canteen off his hip and took a drink. After a minute, he started talking.

"They call me Dancer because during my first combat, I wandered into a minefield while we were attempting to capture a munitions factory at Barnard's Star. We were briefed on it and it was marked on our HUD but, idiot rookie that I was, I stumbled into it anyway." He paused to take another drink.

"Yet you're still here" I observed, stating the obvious.

He nodded. "Brilliant, newbie. Hear that Connor? Nothing gets past these new fish. This one's a regular Sherlock Holmes." He paused to take another drink before he continued. "Don't ask me how or why though because I don't remember anything about how I got out of there. A couple of the guys who saw me said that me running out of the field while trying not to let my feet touch the ground was the funniest thing they'd seen in a while."

Connor had moved closer to where we were sitting and was listening to Herrera talk. "That's why we call him Twinkletoes." She grinned as she watched Herrera, looking for a reaction.

Herrera scoffed and gave Connor a dirty look. "Hell with that. 'Dancer' I can live with."

A minute passed with nobody saying anything else. I cleared my throat. "So... what does that have to do with Widow?"

Drisal is coming apart.
This from the scene preceding yesterday’s snip.

- Brother’s Keeper, my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power

He could say it. This failure was his father's
failure: his failure to accept the truth, his fear. *You're a coward.* The need bubbled within him, a geyser ready to erupt. The confrontation. *It has to be.*

In the frigid stillness, no one dared speak.
Drisal rubbed his fingers against his sweating palm. Lord Shelwon shuddered as if throwing off a nightmare, and stepped up. "What is the matter?" He looked from one of their drawn faces to the other. Lord Deran fingered the rock in his hand. "Why," Lord Shelwon OBSERVED, "that stone is dead. What
happened?"
