St Laurence Church, Ludlow Shropshire.

In 1540, John Leland described the church as “very Fayre and large and richly adorned and taken for the Fayrest in all these parts”. This sentiment still holds true as you can see by the crossing.
If you've not been, it's well worth the trip.

Looking up at the crossing of St Laurence Church. The 4 arches of perpendicular style frame the central square. This itself has a vaulted ceiling.

Lynchets and hedgerows, remnants of strip fields at Chillerton #IsleofWight, #MedievalMonday

View from north end of Chillerton Down looking southeast towards the other side of the valley where there are horizonal hedgerows and lynchets along the hillside forming narrow strip fields. Far views beyond to Stenbury Down.

The iconic Corfe Castle near Wareham in Dorset - one of the first stone built castles following the Norman conquest. The current remains date from the late 11th century to the 13th century. 📸 My own. #MedievalMonday #CorfeCastle

Discovered (by me, at least) on a sunny cycle in Brittany last month, the Manor of Touche Carné was constructed in the 15th century and has recently been restored. #MedievalMonday

A stone manor house with a slate roof and and polygonal stair tower at one end. Trees behind, and a cloudy sky.

A jackdaw takes flight from the tower of St Vigor in Colombiers-sur-Seulles, a small village in Normandy, France

The tower was built in the Romanesque style and dates to 1096!

Calder Abbey in West Cumbria. This was originally a Savigniac monastery founded in 1134. It was refounded in 1142. The ruins are privately owned but I understand that the owner does tours for a fee. Photo from Wikipedia.

The old site of The Clink, London's most notorious medieval prison! #MedievalMonday

Built in 1144, it was owned by the Bishop of Winchester who could throw people in for heresy or for failing to pay their debts to him

Awful place but... great name for prison 😅

A delicately painted shield that may have been a gift or a prize in a tournament. It shows a lady wearing a Flemish pointed headdress and a young knight kneeling at her feet. The skeletal figure of Death lurks behind him. Seen in The British Museum.
