a few sandwiches short of a picnic

but we'll make do
I tear our lonely sandwich in half
and give one half to you
the ants stay away, out of pity, no doubt,
so we lie on the grass, stare up at the sky,
and begin to count,
one dragon,
one unicorn,
one crocodile,
one whale,
two dolphins,
three elephants,
four pirate ships setting sail,
imagination slides slow slow slow across the blue,
if we spent our whole lives counting clouds
I think that would be enough for me and you

it took paul mccartney two minutes

to write the groove and rhythm,
the melody of "get back"
mozart composed his last 3 symphonies
in six weeks
charlie parker came up with 8 bar melodies
on the spot
b.b. king wrote "lucille" in the studio,
improvising over ten minutes
a spoken word blues track
of how he got his gibson back,
great things don't always need time
but they last, echo and echo and echo
a harbor of hopes and schemes
and the universe hums
whether we hear it or not
a needle skip-skip-skipping
as the record spins
playing the same story over and over again
the same note
remember when, remember when
BANG BOOM
and the world begins

lure (the brightness of snow)

can fool a bee into believing it’s spring
that crystal white solidity blinds the mind
and all five eyes, two compound,
three ocelli
to the freeze underneath,
what does it think, as it sinks into the freeze?
fear, regret?
or does it believe,
I made it through the maze, finally,
I made it, I'm dissolving into the sun,
back to where I came from,
and who knew, who could've guessed,
heaven would be so cold?

there's a paving stone

on a street in brussels
darker than the rest
one night,
someone pried it out
took it away,
affixed a resist
to the smooth top,
sandblasted
with abrasive grit
six words
smoothed gold leaf
inside the grooves
then slipped the paving stone
back into the brussels street
that morning someone noticed
or maybe not
the next week someone noticed
or maybe not
the next month
the next year
or maybe not
one day, anyway,
a poet looked down
a line of gold catching the eye
and read
'I used to be a mountain'
the poet photographed
the paving stone
and the next day
and the next day
and the next day
people looked down
paused their feet
and thought
of all the things they used to be, too

but you look at the sky
and I know what I see

still looking up at the cloud

he has seized the light

arrested its flight
in every daguerreotype
handed it piece by piece to the world
a bequest to humanity
who have never seen their faces
except in reverse
who have never seen their eyes
look anywhere but at themselves
louis writes down in a neat hand,
in schematics and blueprints,
just what to do for you to see you
polishing the plate, iodizing,
exposing in the camera,
mercury developing, fixing the image,
all patent free
and within weeks
all around the world
people hold out a small,
embossed leather case,
velvet lined, a copper plate inside,
silvery finish under glass,
slowly, they open it,
see themselves in black and white
slowly, they look around
at the people who know them
say, wonder in their eyes,
so this is what I look like
