New version of Affinity supports dropping a 3d model into the image like a normal layer and being able to rotate it. That's pretty crazy. Gonna be a learning curve but I think I need to learn Affinity now.

made an infinite flat layered sky
tried to make it look like Quake)

(it's 2 planes that calculate their UVs in the shader based on world coordinates and shift over time. They very huge, but they are locked to the camera)
