Thanos Gkritzalis (@vliz.be) at #ICOS2026SC presenting opportunities and challenges for incorporating marine Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs) into ICOS Ocean observations as part of the @horizoneu.bsky.social project #NUBICOS
đź’ˇWhen does a CO2 measurement becomes societal impact? Evi-Carita Riikonen from ICOS HO presents a two-pathway model Research Infrastructures can use to show how project outputs become services and knowledge for society

The #ICOSCities project developed urban GHG measurements, and e.g. confirmed the Paris emission reduction, tells Thomas Lauvaux from ICOS ATC, @lsce-ipsl.bsky.social. However, to reduce costs, improve the mid-cost sensors, and have networks run by cities are necessary for future. #ICOS2026SC

Day 2 of ICOS Science Conference 2026 is here!
We are excited to pick up where we left off with another day of inspiring talks on all things #climatescience and #greenhousegases
Feel like you're missing out? Keep up with the highlights using the hashtag #ICOS2026SC
"An artist only needs oil paints, a canvas and eddy covariance data"✨
Concluding day 1 of #ICOS2026SC, an evening of communicating science and climate activism through art at Skissernas Museum with Teemu Lehmusruusu and Leena Järvi, Liliana Scapucci (@lilliscapucci.bsky.social), and Didier Voisin.
At #ICOS2026SC, Witold Tatkiewicz presented CAPASOS – a compact, low-power instrument designed to measure pCO₂ on Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USVs).
@exeter.ac.uk, one of the host institutions of the ICOS Ocean Thematic Centre, is developing CAPASOS within the @george-project.bsky.social (1/3)
At #ICOS2026SC, Witold Tatkiewicz presented CAPASOS – a compact, low-power instrument designed to measure pCO₂ from Uncrewed Surface Vehicles (USVs).
In GEORGE, @exeter.ac.uk and #OffshoreSensing integrated #CAPASOS into a #SailBuoy USV, which completed a 60-day, 1,000+ km mission to the PAP site.
At #ICOS2026SC, Laurent Coppola presented GEORGE work combining membrane-based COâ‚‚ and acoustic wind sensors on a #SeaExplorer glider to estimate air-sea COâ‚‚ fluxes while profiling the upper ocean.
Field trials at #DYFAMED and PAP in 2025 demonstrated the approach’s technical feasibility. 👏
“The ICOS data is the most important data for the observation-based emission verification system we are building in Germany. We couldn’t do anything without it,” says Andrea Kaiser-Weiss from @dwdderwetterdienst.bsky.social, presenting the first results of the German ITMS project. #ICOS2026SC
Simone Sabbatini (@simonesabbatini.bsky.social) from CMCC and ICOS ETC showcasing the FLUXNET Shuttle: the largest continuously updated global collection of ecosystem flux measurements.

Ocean sessions are now underway at #ICOS2026SC! 🌊
Antony Lucio from @noc.ac.uk presented lab-on-chip (LOC) technologies. In GEORGE, NOC develops LOC sensors for autonomous DIC and TA measurements.
The work is being done also in @tricuso.bsky.social, #MaSCOt and #MARCO2 projects, among others.
When you’re with kindred spirits 🤓

Emilio Baud Fraile from @inrae-france.bsky.social presenting preliminary work on the use of data from 5 ICOS stations to 1) evaluate the ORCHIDEE-GM model, 2) assess the impacts of grassland cutting on the albedo effect (rate of sunlight reflection). Nice use of ICOS data for modelling.
#ICOS2026SC
Sam Hammer from ICOS Radiocarbon Laboratory presents a new ICOS capability to estimate and model the 14CO2 European fossil fuel emissions. This could also be used to independently verify the national emission inventories. #ICOS2026SC #inventory #emissions
Coming at you from day 1 of ICOS Science Conference 2026! Let's see what attendees are looking forward to this week
Kicking off the peatlands session at #ICOS2026SC, Annalea Lohila from @ilmatieteenlaitos.fi presenting C budget from ICOS Lompolojänkkä station. Highlighting the importance of long term measurements and cross disciplinary research🤝

Decades-long-measurements in two sites in Switzerland show that the recent very warm and dry years have reduced the carbon sink of these spruce forests. With dry air, the trees rely mostly on water deep in the soil > will be more vulnerable in future. By @nbuchmann.bsky.social @ethz.ch. #ICOS2026SC
Full house for the plenary talk by Anna Villnäs from @tvarminne.bsky.social, presenting preliminary results on the role of biodiversity in regulating carbon cycling in coastal estuarine ecosystems. "Living carbon pools matter for GHG exchange!"
