Has it really only been a week since #ICOS2026SC?

A huge thank you to our organisers, volunteers and the 622 participants who made ICOS Science Conference 2026 an unforgettable week.

Session recordings, posters and the photo album are all now available.

The 30 years of measurements in an ICOS station in mainland Denmark show the beech forest has captured an increasing amount of carbon annually, because the growing season lengthens with the changing climate. However, during the drought in 2018, the carbon sink was 25% smaller. #ICOS2026SC

A graph showing the size of the forests carbon sink during 30 years, 1996-2026. Kim Pilegaard presenting.

ICOS fixed ocean stations can support our understanding of the carbon cycle in the land-ocean continuum. Signals from river runoff events were detectable at Paloma and Miramare stations in the Gulf of Trieste.

Alisa Krasnova from University of Tartu presents 5 years of GHG flux data from a drained peatland forest in Estonia. The forest was a net sink until 2024, but became a source in 2025 after long periods of rain and flooding. Shows drained peatlands are vulnerable to climate variations.

New way to determine ocean carbon sink - using 3 methods based on independent observations - shows the ocean sink is stronger than estimated by current models. It also confirms the stagnated land sink. To be published soon! In #ICOS2026SC by @neillmackay.bsky.social of @exeter.ac.uk.

A new model developed in @lsce-ipsl.bsky.social could allow estimating the climate impact on the European vegetation - utilising observations from 43 ICOS stations - in weeks rather than months or years, as presented by Otto Briner. #ICOS2026SC

At the #ICOS2026SC session on GHG observations in Africa, Alfred Otom presents preliminary results on carbon dynamics and GHG exchange in papyrus wetlands in Lake Victoria, Kenya. Data shows the ecosystem was a weak carbon sink in 2025, but lots of seasonal variability present.

Carlotta Dentico presented a study at #ICOS2026SC revealing seasonal and interannual patterns of pCO2 variability in Southern Adriatic Pit. Results underscore its role as a weak carbon sink. Long-term data series acquired at the #EMSO & ICOS station IT-FOS-E2M3A were important in the analysis.

The #ICOS2026SC panel's advice for scientists who would like their research to impact policy:
- Find a science-policy framework or organisation to collaborate with, so that your results are included in the right pathways.
- In policy-collab, be actitive and responsive to their needs.
- Be patient.
