However, Smith's career came to a rather abrupt end when he felt forced to leave Glasgow after his daughter, Madeliene, went on trial for the murder of her former lover in 1857. Overtoun house was one of his final projects before his death in 1863 aged just 55.

Overtoun House in Dumbarton. Built in the early 1860s, it was designed in a Scots Baronial style by James Smith. Smith was a well respected architect who married the daughter of another famous Scottish architect, David Hamilton.

While 70 of the people on board during the launch were rescued, it took a fortnight to recover all the bodies of those who died. Around fifty of those who died are buried in the same cemetery where this memorial still stands.

After being freed from Prison, Mandela visited the city in 1993 and paid tribute to the people of Glasgow for the stand they took against apartheid in a country some 6,000 miles away.

A few years later, in a major bit of typically-Scottish political trolling, the name of the street on which the consulate was sited was changed by the City's Council from St George's Place to Nelson Mandela Place.

In 1981, the then-imprisoned Mandela was given the freedom of the city (with Glasgow being the first city in the world to give him this honour).

It's been sited so Mandela looks, hand raised, towards the former Glasgow Stock Exchange (just visible in the background), which was home to a South African Consulate during the Apartheid era.

Its aim was to provide a social diversion and spiritual guidance for young men who worked in Glasgow's many iron foundries on an ad-hoc basis, and who had a tendency to roam the streets, often causing a nuisance.

Originally St Rollox Church, in 1894 it became home to the St Rollox branch of the Foundry Boys Religious Society, an organisation created in the Olympia Music Hall in the Cowcaddens area of the city in 1865.

I love how this mid-Victorian church on Tharsis Street in the east of Glasgow is set into the slope of Garngad Hill.

As you can see from these photos, each had its own distinctive appearance, making them a key architectural, as well as social, feature in many local neighbourhoods.

After the first one opened on London Road in 1876, public bath and wash houses rapidly became a key part of life in Glasgow, and by 1914, there were 26 of them spread right across the city.

Mosaics of scenes from the history of the Garngad and Royston areas of Glasgow. Created by local community groups working with artist Jane McInally, they can be found in Spire Park surrounding the remains of the former Townhead-Blochairn Parish Church.

They included thirty-six wash-stalls, two washing machines, a seventy-five foot long swimming pool, twenty-five private baths for men, and only six private baths for women. They proved exceedingly popular and were visited over 400,000 times in the Summer of 1938 alone.

The sculpted ghost signs on the former Maryhill public baths and wash house in Glasgow (now the Glasgow Club Maryhill) mentiones in my previous post. These baths were designed by A.B. MacDonald and were opened in 1898.

Indeed, if you look at the rear of the Maryhill Leisure centre, you can still see the original facade and the inscribed ghost sign identifying its origin as a bath house.

It's called Bath Street because it was here that the city's first indoor public bath house was opened by a local textile merchant and entrepreneur William Harley in the early 1800s.
