What a good mama!
A 1” #oxycephalus #amphipod is raising her brood on a drifting section of a Venus girdle #ctenophore.
Shot on scuba, off Okinawa, out over the deep abyss where its several thousand feet deep, while drifting with the plankton, at night

Thank you to @maxfarnworth.bsky.social for inviting me to present the latest data on the wonderful and weird #ctenophore nerve net and aboral organ, a great collaboration with @pawelburkhardt.bsky.social
Above is all my Raja Ampat videos starring #ctenophores but the additional species, also at Mansuar Mioskon - seemingly the #RajaAmpat #ctenophore capital! - was this angel of a Lobate #CombJelly, Spot Winged Comb Jellyfish (Ocyropsis maculata). There endeth the rabbit hole! #combjellies #Indonesia
And here also from Mansuar Mioskon is the striking Bolinopsis rubripunctata.
We also saw Leucothea Comb Jellies at Mansuar Mioskon, Raja Ampat, here against a curtain of Blue-green Chromis (Chromis viridis)

Here's more Leucothea species from Arborek, Raja Ampat - you can see the tentacles quite well.

@numenini.bsky.social "How large" was answered by Wikipedia, up to 15cm... but then, iridescence by structural colour, "photonic crystal", 🤯
Fun rabbithole! 🐇 🕳️
Besides a Sea Walnut (Mnemiopsis leidyi), here's a Common Northern Comb Jelly (Bolinopsis infundibulum). This fragile being phosphoresces at night & the larger individuals can be found as deep as 1km. The sea at Mill Bay #Salcombe #Devon on 25 June was 18°C, air 24. #ctenophore #ctenophores #invert
Also at Mill Bay #Salcombe was the much less flamboyant #ctenophore, the alien #invasivespecies, Sea Walnut (Mnemiopsis leidyi) native to US East Coast & 1st recorded in UK at The Wash in 2014, arriving in Europe via ballast water in Black Sea. Voracious predator of zooplankton, fish eggs & larvae.
Also at Blackpool Sands #Devon, thrilled to see my 1st Sea Gooseberries (Pleurobrachia pileus), less so the alien #invasivespecies Sea Walnut (Mnemiopsis leidyi) introduced from West Atlantic in 1980s, likely via ship ballast in Black Sea, which competes with the Gooseberry. #ctenophore #combjelly
Support a wonderful initiative while rockin’ a super cool comb jelly ctee-shirt! (Available in three colours) 🦑 #ctenophore
Gotta love benthic comb jellies! 🤩 #ctenophore
