Photo, no descriptionThe neighbor has grown two pines. Or, perhaps those who lived there once when the rent wasn’t for masqueraders playing pretend in million dollar homes, planted these conifers with black hands. Tended to them until the city said taxes had gone so high that they were pushed a street over, another, one more… all the way to another island, separated by a river’s rushing from the roots they had put to earth uptown where the Columbia undergrads sip twelve dollar beer and dream of one day owning anything.

Unknown miles below,
another town bisected
by one state highway
and many numbered
splinters.

Engine trails fade in daylight
and stars disappear from night.
A child looks up at the blink,
says “Someday” with promise.
Assuredly.
