Wrong Way
My Days Are Numbered (9/?)

Photo and poem (also in alt text)

#nyc #newyork #subway #poetry #poems #poetsofbsky #lifttothesky #writingcommunity

Slipped through a buzzing door
and dared to think I was slick
to save three bucks in this place
where it costs money to breathe.

Extra hour on the train,
swear the sign said Uptown,
but now I am in Brooklyn
and my phone is dying.

Extra hour to get back,
assuming I can read.
But across the water spans
the Manhattan Bridge

and I get to go across twice,
seeing the blinking of the lives
of a million people who each pray
to take their trips the right way.

#lifttothesky my longtime friend @daveashleypoet.bsky.social. If you haven’t met Dave, shame on you! No but really, he’s a funny guy who’s ridiculously talented. Always supportive and looking for new ideas, he’s just great and he comes with a penguin.

#LiftToTheSky Monday asks for generosity, not perfection.

A black-and-white photograph of seabirds flying above a calm sea. Gentle waves roll toward the shore beneath a pale sky. In the centre of the image, handwritten-style text reads “#LIFTTOTHESKY,” with “@thebrokenspine.co.uk” beneath it. The Broken Spine fountain pen logo appears in the top right corner.

My Days Are Numbered (8/?)

Poem also in alt text.

#poetry #writingcommunity #lifttothesky #cornell

To listen in silence,
refuse to hear
how your mother screamed
your sister wailed.
These are the ears
of we men
gathered here.

To watch passive,
hollow hands groping
your grandmother
and the you within her.
These are the eyes
of we men
gathered here.

To smell nothing,
of the bubbling fizz
inducing bile and fatigue
inside a woman you call friend.

We are the men gathered here,
controlling the kindling and fire
since we all slept in wet caves.

This is a view of the bottom.
Somewhere beneath,
places the stains and trash wind up.
Liquid of unknown provenance
makes unholy pools on speckled mass.

This is a view of the bottom.
Where the eyes naturally fall
when a man speaks gibberish
maybe fifty miles a minutes
only feet away and you don’t
know if you hate him or fear him
but everybody claims to know him
in the after, yet…

This is a view of the bottom.
And even if we don’t admit it,
it’s an intimately familiar sight.

For Monday’s #LiftToTheSky I’m bringing you @throwawayreg.bsky.social Notes from Various Sofas from my sofa to yours. A stalwart of #PoemsAbout this new release from @sixtyoddpress.bsky.social gives you irreverent, humorous, short verse to make you smile. Pies, pints, sex and settees in abundance.

A photo of a book cover Notes from various settees roger waldron. A graphic of a blue background with a yellow settee and 3 framed prints of 3 more settees in purple green and orange. A small round wooden table at the right end of the settee with the hand and arm of a departing person with grey trousers, brown socks and a blue sleeve. White skirting either side of the sofa and standard lamp with yellow shade far right.

Squaresville (5/?)

Poem and photo (also in alt text)

Monuments keep getting higher
and their edges get sharper.

The intricacy of the ornate,
the artistry of audacity,
replaced by hard corners.

A data point flows in endless waves
of information swelling along my shore
lines to be found and lines to be drawn,
always with the toughest of edges.

Stair Poem (After A.A. Milne)

Photo and poem (also in alt text)

After A.A. Milne—

A lifetime can be whiled away
at the bottom of the staircase,
gazing up at how many flights
rest unbidden and waiting.

A lifetime can be whiled away
at the top of the staircase,
ogling back at what’s climbed,
longing need for those passed.

But a lifetime can be found
only somewhere on a middle stair—
when your legs are heaviest
and your eyes are locked

on nothing but the next
step that must be taken.

I am the old and I am the new.
Where brick-bone and glass-pop.
Where sewer arteries move train cars
and millions of cells powerhouse through.

I am an art deco street light
with Bluetooth compatibility,
lamp-shading your selfie
any every hue you want tonight.

The neighbor has grown two pines

Photo and poem (also in alt text).

#poetry #poem #nyc #nycpoetry #harlem #urbanexploration #lifttothesky #poets #writers

The neighbor has grown two pines.
Or, perhaps those who lived there once
when the rent wasn’t for masqueraders
playing pretend in million dollar homes,
planted these conifers with black hands.
Tended to them until the city said taxes
had gone so high that they were pushed
a street over, another, one more…
all the way to another island,
separated by a river’s rushing
from the roots they had put to earth
uptown where the Columbia undergrads
sip twelve dollar beer and dream
of one day owning anything.

Unknown miles below,
another town bisected
by one state highway
and many numbered
splinters.

Engine trails fade in daylight
and stars disappear from night.
A child looks up at the blink,
says “Someday” with promise.
Assuredly.
