"Shell shock" to "PTSD": how language rewrote what trauma means.

A name change tracks a century of medicine finally admitting our reactions to trauma aren't personal failings, the brain doing exactly what it evolved to do.

Calling women "hysterical" is based on a 4000 year old medical myth.

From wandering wombs to Freud to the DSM, our understanding of "hysteria" may have changed but it still shows gender bias.

The #ConnectedAtBirth #etymology of the week is FUCK/REPUGNANT/POINT #wotd #fuck #repugnant #point

Many people find the word fuck repugnant, but etymologically it's worth talking about so let's get straight to the point. There is no consensus about where the word fuck comes from, but one idea is that it can traced back to the Proto-Indo-European root *peuk- “to prick”. If so it would be related to Latin pugnare “to fight”, which leads to repugnant, literally “to fight back”, and impugn, as well as Latin pungere “to prick, pierce”, which leads to words such as punctual, puncture, pungent, and point. But I trust you get the point of what I'm saying.

Bank: From Italian banca (“bench”), referring to moneylenders’ tables in marketplaces.
