#WordWeavers Sept 13: Share a line of dialogue that sounds innocent without context but absolutely isn’t.

Plenty of conversations in my books are not what they seem, but I will let the readers themselves decide where they want to be, what interpretation they […]

“Hypothalamus!” Prefrontal Cortex shouts, trying to catch her attention. She turns her
head, a movement that removes what little balance she had, and waves a slow wave as her
next bounce sends her tumbling through a door with yet another giggle and a thump.

“Hiiiii Cortiel” Her voice is heard through the open door; you are almost certain she’s
lying on the floor. A pair of feet, toes wriggling, sticks out from the doorway.

“Don’t call me “Cortie™!" Prefrontal Cortex breathes to the clipboard, scribbling
notes. “Hypothalamus, control yourself]

“Or not, love,” the husky voice of Ventral Striatum drifts across the hallway followed
by a sweet, rich smell of chocolate.

You smile. Prefrontal Cortex gives you a stern look, but you can see them swallow
Twice.

“This is not protocol, they protest and snatch the teacup back from you, again
without spilling a drop. The clipboard somehow disappears into their jacket without
disfiguring it. You frown,

#WordWeavers Sept 13: Share a line of dialogue that sounds innocent without context but absolutely isn’t.

A couple of days later she showed up in a brand-new set of shorts, runners and t-shirt. She said “My dad is just amazing. He took me to Eaton’s to get some ‘play-clothes’. The snooty clerk […]

#WordWeavers 12 Sep: If you removed one supporting character from your story, whose absence would change the plot the most?

The Librarian, for sure. The entire plot would fail without them. There would be no story.

#WordWeavers 11. What does your MC believe about themselves at the beginning of the story that turns out to be completely wrong?

Cantor is convinced he's washed up and useless as an investigator

Four murders later...?

For disOrder, I'm going to say Elaine. She's a pillar of decency among a nest of unreliable, sinister, ulterior-motivated, creepy, cruel, narcissistic, stupid and just […]

The mad scientist. And, who doesn't like a mad scientist in their story?

#WritersCoffeeClub 12/9: Who do you share snippets of your WIP with?
I share through this prompt-thread and #WordWeavers when appropriate. And occasionally on Substack.
Also, and in normal circumstances every day, through #WIPSnips on Bluesky.

#WordWeavers 12/9: If you removed one supporting character, whose absence would change the story the most? (I don’t write ‘plots’).
Hmmm… I’m thinking of Gafeira, who’s a supporting character in Book 8… but am I cheating? Because, as you’ll see soon,…

#WordWeavers: 9/10 Share a description from your WIP that establishes atmosphere without explicitly naming the emotion.
The decision to sabotage the showing with an overdose of laxatives should have been enough. No one would take D’Arte seriously. The 13 soiled works sold for $1.2 million.

#WordWeavers 10/9: Share a description from your WIP that establishes atmosphere without explicitly naming the emotion.

This is a passage from my upcoming book, “The Management Apologises for the Inconvenience”.

Welcome to #TheMentalMansion

They lift a dream that glows colder than the others. The moment it rises from the chest, the air around you cools, and the shadows shimmer as though dusted with frost.
The cloud unfurls, slow and reverent.
You’re standing in a winter night so still it feels enchanted. Moonlight glistens on untouched snow, each crystal catching the light like a tiny star. The trees are coated in frost, their branches glittering as though dipped in silver. Your path home stretches ahead, glowing faintly, a pale ribbon through a galaxy of frozen sparks.
The snow muffles every sound. The cold steals every scent. And in that silence, the world feels impossibly vast and impossibly gentle.
You remember the way your breath hung in the air like a ghost. The night wrapped around you, making you slow your steps, just to stay in it a little longer.

“At once," the waiter promised, but 'at once' in restaurant terms could not mean instantly. They were left in a clotted silence; her word, awkward, was hardly sufficient.
Something to say… "I felt a fool, I must say, when I got to Drumlenn and found you were back here. Especially as I’d just come from the Velya Lakes."
She smiled, readily grasping how he must have felt, but then the wide eyes narrowed. "But… I supposed you were here on business of some kind and then thought… you mean you came all this way just to see me?"
It was always, he realised, going to come to this point; he’d just thought it might take a little longer. Well, nothing to do but admit the truth. "That was my sole purpose."
