He has an alert, affectionate expression and his tongue is out. Behind him is the tall, stone keep-like east tower. The ground is covered in parched grass due to the prolonged dry spell. Construction of the castle starting around 1120, the castle evolved over 900 years from a formidable medieval fortress, an Elizabethan mansion, a besieged English Civil War stronghold and a Georgian romantic ruin. It was started in around 1120 by Walter L'Espec, a man whose large size and loud voice were by all accounts more impressive than his name, which means"Wally the Woodpecker". Most of the visible medieval fortifications, however, date from the time of crusader Robert de Roos and his descendants.
