A low-angle view of a stone castle battlement silhouetted against a luminous sunset sky that gradients from deep orange to dusky violet. The Irish flag flutters atop a tall flagpole, lit by the warm glow of the sun just dipping behind the stone merlons and crenellations, casting a bright lens flare over the rugged masonry.

Ancient. Brick. Inhabited. Triangular. Cave. Tallest. Longest. Grounds. Guinness issues eight castle size records under eight qualifiers. None is largest castle. Five measure no area: Burghausen, Bavaria, wins on 1,051.02 meters. Check the qualifier before repeating one. #Castles #History

For #scape Friday. Scotland's Eilean Donan Castle as the morning mist burned off (2025). The clouds added a perfect fantasy touch to a magical landscape. #Scotland #castles #photography #photographersofbluesky #landscapes #Highlands #EastCoastKin #ECK #WCK

This photo displays Eilean Donan Castle, a historic fortress located in the western Highlands of Scotland.

The stone fortress sits on a small island surrounded by water and greenery. Its ancient walls, towers, and small windows dominate the right side of the frame. A multi-arched stone bridge stretches across the water on the left, connecting the mainland to the castle grounds.

Low-hanging clouds and a thick mist shroud the hills in the background, creating a moody, overcast atmosphere typical of the Scottish Highlands.

Burg Katz (Katz Castle), above St. Goarshausen from the 1360s, was built to overshadow a Trier castle downstream, nicknamed the mouse. The boast is legend. France blew up the cat in 1806; today's Katz is an 1890s rebuild. The mouse is original. Send this to a Rhine-cruise friend. #Castles #History

Burg Katz (Katz Castle) on its wooded spur above St. Goarshausen on the Middle Rhine in Germany, seen in autumn from the heights opposite: the ruined medieval keep behind nineteenth-century turrets and steep roofs, a cargo barge on the river and the Loreley rock in the bend beyond.

If you look closely, you’ll be able to see the stunning Dunrobin Castle, a building we think looks like it could have been plucked straight from the pages of a fairytale. What do you think?

The Duc d'Aumale willed Château de Chantilly, north of Paris, to the Institut de France in 1886 on conditions: nothing inside may ever move or be lent. France's second collection of old masters after the Louvre hangs where he put it. Would you take a gift with that string? #Castles #History

Between 122 and 196 people. That was Joan de Valence's household in her accounts for 1296 and 1297: John the baker, Walter the farrier, up to nine chaplains, 20 poor fed by charity. Goodrich Castle in Herefordshire kept staff for when she left. Add a job the tours skip. #Castles #History

Clothes hung in a castle privy, they say, because ammonia killed moths. The 2011 BBC source it traces to says fleas, and hedges. An anonymous editor typed moths over it in 2018. Burg Eltz on the Moselle has 14 privies. Where did you first read the moth line? #Castles #History

Kilns in the state rooms. Europe's first hard-paste porcelain works ran inside Albrechtsburg Castle at Meissen, Saxony, from June 6, 1710 to 1863. Begun in 1471 as the first German Schloss, the palace was barely lived in before the furnaces came. Go for the ceilings, not the view. #Castles #History

Albrechtsburg Castle (Albrechtsburg Meissen) and the spires of Meissen Cathedral on the rock above the Elbe in Saxony, Germany: a white late-Gothic palace under steep red roofs, the town's houses along the quay below, the whole reflected in the still river.

At 620 meters on a flat granite summit above Wintzenheim, Château du Hohlandsbourg takes in Colmar, the Rhine plain, the Munster valley and the Black Forest in one turn. Siegfried de Gundolsheim raised it for the Habsburgs from 1279. Two replies below. #Castles #History

Count the chimneys. There are 55 at Cecilienhof Palace, each laid in a different brickwork pattern, around 176 rooms and five courtyards. The Hohenzollerns finished it in 1917, while the empire that ordered it bled out. See if you can find two that match. #Castles #History

In 1308 Jacques de Molay and the Templar leadership were locked in the Coudray Tower at Château de Chinon. The parchment absolving them stayed lost in the Vatican until 2001. It saved nobody. Follow for the rest of the Loire fortresses. #Castles #History

Sophie Charlotte died in 1705, aged 36. Her widower renamed the house and the town after her. Charlottenburg Palace began as her Lietzenburg villa in 1695, burned in November 1943, and came back from the 1950s. Send this to whoever owes you a Berlin trip. #Castles #History
