Construction of the castle starting around 1120, the castle evolved over 900 years from a formidable medieval fortress, an Elizabethan mansion, a besieged English Civil War stronghold and a Georgian romantic ruin. It was started in around 1120 by Walter L'Espec, a man whose large size and loud voice were by all accounts more impressive than his name, which means"Wally the Woodpecker". Most of the visible medieval fortifications, however, date from the time of crusader Robert de Roos and his descendants.
