It was speculated in the 17th century that this newly discovered Middle Jurassic fossil, likely from a Megalosaurus, might belong to a Roman war elephant or a biblical giant. In 1763, naturalist Richard Brookes noted the obvious & named the fossil 'Scrotum humanum' #WyrdWednesday

Illustration from the 1677 'Natural History of Oxford-shire' by Robert Plot, first Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, who systemically studied paleontology and natural history. Physician Richard Brookes had his 'A System of Natural History', 6 vols. published in 1763 and was a prolific writer and translator. In the 1990s Brookes' description was officially rejected 🎨 The 17th century b&w illustration is thought to be of a Megalosaurus femur but, for now, info remains inconclusive until new discoveries and interpretations are made.

The Great Pustaha is a large Batak magic book from North Sumatra. Written by nine generations of datu/priest, it contains spells and potions to destroy villages, kill enemies, inspire love, and heal. The cover has a carving of Naga Padoha, a giant primordial serpent of the underworld. #WyrdWednesday

The creature is covered with symbols and surrounded by small human-like and animal-like figures, along with small texts.Photograph of The Great Pustaha when closed. The covers are made of black wood with a carving of Naga Padoha, tied with a twine to help opening the book. The back cover has four wooden "legs" that serve as the book stand and the "hooves" of Naga Padoha.

Venezuela's Mount Roraima rises behind enormous cliffs, its summit isolated from the surrounding landscape. Its geography helped inspire lost-world associations. If Earth were hiding a surviving dinosaur anywhere, a giant cloud-covered tabletop mountain certainly looks the part. #WyrdWednesday

“Ten Thousand Years in Ice” is an early #scifi short story by Robert Duncan Milne (1844–99) where a man frozen in the ancient past is revived in the present. Milne’s documentary style led readers of a Hungarian newspaper to believe it was true

Who needs cryptids when the swamp bred Oscar? 🐊
A 1,000 lb, century old Okefenokee landlord who took buckshot & kept walking. I have fond memories of seeing Oscar! Today his preserved skeleton watches visitors - displaying the flagpole topper & dog collar he digested along the way. #WyrdWednesday

1970's photo showing the legendary Okefenokee Joe with Oscar the alligator. A vintage photograph of a massive, heavily armored alligator named Oscar crawling along a sunny dirt path in front of naturalist Okefenokee Joe, who stands watching him by a wooden bridge and swamp trees. The complete, articulated bone skeleton of a giant alligator, Oscar, displayed inside a long glass showcase with an illuminated floor, positioned within a rustic visitor center.

Arthur Conan Doyle's 1912 novel The Lost World strands explorers on a South American plateau where dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures survive. It helped cement one of adventure fiction's greatest ideas: somewhere inaccessible, prehistory never ended. #WyrdWednesday
