A revisit to Long Meg and her Daughters for #StandingStoneSunday

So much going on at this site with the setting, the geology, the carvings and the earlier monuments - just a fascinating glimpse at the Neolithic.

📷 October 2025 #AncientBluesky #Archaeology #Neolithic #Cumbria

A squat, white standing stone in a field. The stone is speckled with green lichen and is made of rhyolite and is a glacial erratic.A tall block of red sandstone, known as 'Long Meg', in a field. Another view of the tall red sandstone block of Long Meg, from this angle the stone appears tapered and long-necked. Other stones can be seen across the grassy field towarslds some deciduous trees.

My Google pics found this when I asked it to search my photo library for a #StandingStoneSunday contribution. Taken in 2011 it's the Runstenskullen or The Rune Stone Hill in Lund, Sweden. This is a collection of C10th rune stones from Skåne.

A colour photo of a a grassy mound which is edged by 6 standing stones. My family are looking at the runes engraved on one of the stones.

In la forêt de Toulfoën, this recumbent ‘menhir’ was raised in 1957 by the office du tourisme. Its provenance is dubious, but it symbolises the pardon of the birds, an ancient bird market held at the edge of the forest. #StandingStoneSunday #Britanny #Bretagne #Breizh

A 4-5m tall lichen topped, bullet shaped menhir with a small cave like indent at the base. It is surrounded by deciduous trees and the late afternoon sun is peeping through and threatening to flood the image with light.

The Easterton Of Roseisle Stone - a Class 1 Pictish Symbol Stone discovered at Moray in 1894. The stone probably dates to the 5th or 6th centuries, and is now part of the collections at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. 📸 My own #StandingStoneSunday #Picts

The Stockton Stone: If you are coming to Andy B's (Sold Out) talk in Norwich next week you will hear about this strange little stone #StandingStoneSunday. Situated on the edge of the A146 just before the Stockton sign as you come from Norwich. More 1/

The smaller but no less impressive stone circle at Stanton Drew, Somerset. Part of a ritual complex dating to 4,500 years ago, the main circle is the third largest in Britain and would contained a forest of huge wooden posts in concentric rings

Up early in Edinburgh, from where I can offer this for #StandingStoneSunday from the wonderful National Museum. And it does look like a bike over a windscreen, thus demonstrating superiority of 2 wheeled transport 😉

Photo taken from across the Loch of Harray to the east of the stones and features water in the foreground, undulating land on which 12 stones and two people feature and a hillside and strip of cloudy sky in the background.

The Hole Stone (or Crow Stone) in Galloway. Local tradition says that it was used during marriage ceremomies, by joining hands through the hole. It stands close to the White Cairn and another stone reputedly once accompanied it.

Moody black and white photo of a standing stone in a grassy field. The stone is pierced by a hole, about one third of the way from the top. The sky is cloudy but light is breaking to the right.

Ok it’s not a standing stone in the Prehistoric sense, in fact it is currently not even standing, but this old boundary stone was a great find yesterday and so is today’s #standingstonesunday
