Marcus turned with alarm from the smouldering gun of the bounty hunter to the Wings entrance at the sound of the voice. Miranda was standing calmly among the wreckage of the doorway in her usual, wholly inappropriate uniform. When a breeze cast itself across the barren landing bays, her frilled skirt fluttered. Marcus felt a lurch in his stomach as he considered the maid too a possible casualty of this attack. But Miranda met his gaze at once and smiled sweetly for him.
And when he turned back to Elm, he saw that a change had come over the tall woman. Gone was the condescending smirk and the cool gunslinger’s gaze. In their place, horror.
“Oh, fuck!”
And across the space, the voice of Raven. “Disengage limiters.”

“Yes,” said Raven simply. “Yes, no casualties so far.”
“You sound surprised,” remarked Miriham from the rear of the group.
“I am. Talyn could have easily pushed further than she has, but she appears to be pulling her punches. It’s as if… Oh, shit.”
“As if what?” Miriham demanded, and then came up sharp against Marcus’ back as the group came to a sudden halt.
Hal had his hand raised at the head of the group, and his knees were bent in a ready posture. Beside him, Aki was crouched even lower as if ready to leap. Both sets of eyes were fixed on a large, dark shape that had just emerged from the shadow of the Rune Carrier. As the rest of the group caught sight of the newcomer, the shadow began to glow with the fiendish light of a beam weapon.
“As if she’s the diversion,” came a deep, powerful voice. “And I’m the real problem.”
