I love Asimov's Science Fiction and the magazine's editors. I've published many stories in the magazine. I subscribe to the magazine. Despite that, I'm done with the new MRM owners. This statement is BS. The new owners have squandered the goodwill of their magazines' readers, writers, and fans. 1/

I'm excited, if a bit late, to announce my workshop, "Publishing Trends, Market Shifts, and Opportunities," coming up October 27 and 29 via Boyds Mills. $59. There will be handouts and a recording.

Details and registration here: boydsmills.org/workshop/pub...

Me too. So frustrating.

I got this email this morning; assumed it was another Medicare scam and deleted. (Well, it is a scam. Just a different type.)

@victoriastrauss.comOct 8, 2026, 4:23 PM

That's good--should at least somewhat limit fraudulent applications.

Can non-Canadians apply for a Canadian ISBN? I’d guess a lot of the slop books come from elsewhere.

@victoriastrauss.comOct 8, 2026, 4:03 PM

Yes but who will track this? What is the verification process, or does one even exist? If not, what’s the disincentive for lying? Penalties aren’t a deterrent if it’s not clear someone is watching.

Thread: rights grabs at Must Read Magazines

@scottedelman.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 3:10 PMReposted by @victoriastrauss.com

I'd intended to update my November 2025 post — and it's difficult to believe that whole mess was less than a year ago — to indicate all MRM contract issues has been solved, as that's what I'd been told. But it seems any update will have to be a bit different. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

More concerning info about rights grabs by Must Read magazines, this time for artwork. Side note: looks like they’re still doing the interminable and not necessarily fruitful negotiation process that writers have reported.

@victoriastrauss.comOct 8, 2026, 1:57 AM

I’m very aware of those users—just a bit amazed at what gets traction sometimes

@victoriastrauss.comOct 8, 2026, 12:38 AM

This is now officially--by far--my highest performing post on Bsky ever. Social media, Who can fathom it?

@victoriastrauss.comOct 7, 2026, 10:26 PM

That certainly fits the AI fraud profile.

@victoriastrauss.comOct 7, 2026, 9:49 PM

Interesting! Thanks!

@victoriastrauss.comOct 7, 2026, 9:48 PM

If that became an issue, I would think they could just introduce a new ISBN prefix, like when the 979 prefix was added in (I think) 2020.

@victoriastrauss.comOct 7, 2026, 9:42 PM

I take your point. But I think we're in the "something, anything" phase of dealing with the slop book problem.
