Marcus felt warm skin against his palm. Talyn had drawn up alongside him and was holding his hand. It felt very nice indeed. He gripped her palm firmly as his spirit lifted.

He trailed off, expression thoughtful and food forgotten. Talyn took a moment to bask in the self-satisfaction of a job well done, until he turned his eyes on her again with a wistful grin.
“What is it?” she demanded.
“I just don’t think I’ve seen you smile before,” he said. “It’s really nice.”
Talyn frowned, embarrassed. “I am capable of smiling.”
“I know.”
The way he was looking at her now made her feel both distressingly vulnerable and comfortingly warm. Confused and conflicted, Talyn gestured for him to follow her back to the lift.
“We have a long agenda to complete,” she declared. “Please hurry.”

Curious, Talyn turned and met his eyes. His big, blue, sparkling eyes. She felt a rush of excitement in her systems. There it was. The first instance of romantic flirtation. The way the gently suggestive comment, that he owed her something nice, made her feel. It proved Marcus’ expertise. So, he had been on a date before.

Talyn’s eyes were narrow. She shifted her weight from one hip to the other in a very organic gesture of discomfort. “You do not wish to explore our relationship?”
“That’s not what I-…”
“Prisoner Marcus, when the nature of a set is uncertain, one means of identifying the qualifying characteristic is to observe the relationship between members of the set,” she said. “I believe we have reached the limit of meaningful observations in our current environment, so we must expand the scope of the experiment. The result of that observation may be one that hints at the possibility of a deeper, more intimate relationship between us. In that case,” she finished, sighing resignedly, “I hope that the knowledge that you have allowed me to better understand how I relate to other beings provides you with some comfort when you die at the hands of Arkay.”
He flinched. “You’d be okay with that?”
“I am not certain,” she replied plainly. “We have not tested it yet.”
