This week's waterford is a winner of the 2026 annual waterford competition, as chosen by Molly Twomey. It appears in "Duanaire - collected waterfords", the world's first poetry collection of waterfords which is edited by Kevin MacAlan, and features over 300 poems written by more than 90 poets from all over the globe. I twist
to try to see inside myself,
to probe behind my eyes,
my hope and fear at war with what
I thought I knew.
Everything is caught in glimpses
there, just at the bounds
of inner vision,
hazy,
shadowed.

I need a mirror,
but am terrified
in case I find my mild
and inoffensive face
reflected back to me
as something I don’t recognise.

I have no choice
and nobody to blame;
this abyss is mine —
but is it me?
