#OctoberWorldbuilders Hiddigaha still has enough groundwater for the occasional well, but the soil has been salted by millennia of irrigation, so they herd goats, camels, sheep and horses.

There are plenty of ruined cities on the plains of Seyzharel, but they’re mostly recent. The cliffs overlooking the plains are sedimentary rock above metamorphic rock.

The nomadic Tarik subsist off their herds (and esp. camels & goats) and oases/wells, while those in the caravan cities have access to what little fertile terrain there is and import whatever they can’t grow.

Most Urgaians get their water from oases or underground reservoirs. Their homes are usually well-insulated to keep out the worst of the desert heat, most settlements rely on the blessings of Golnesh and Lespir to keep farmland fertile enough for crops.

6. Survival

The Wyrmoilans struggle daily to survive. Groundwater is scarce and rationed strictly, and in the harshest times, they have been forced to eat their mounts. Sand Reaper is barely edible, but if it gives a soldier that little extra muscle, the generals don't care.

Surviving around Kashra is a community effort.

Food comes from hardy crops, gathered desert plants, trade, and whatever can be preserved for leaner stretches. Nothing useful gets wasted. Water is collected and stored communally, with access treated as a necessity rather...

The nomadic tribes have herds of camels and goats that travel with them. Water is usually collected from rain, from the oases they visit on their travels, or, rarely, from rivers. They wear flowing cotton clothing outdoors to happen with airflow.

The desert city of Iram Ubar survives by trading, gardening, hunting, foraging for desert vegetation, & getting water from their enchanted spring (at the city square). They also have an underground water system.

Hunt, collect water and ballfruit at one of several springs in the foothills. Despite being a desert, the Wastes aren't as unforgiving as one might think. Original Enclosure systems take care of most basic needs. It's austere, but the real threats are other. 🧵1/5

In the world of Unsaved, the Medish Arh who live in the Shimmery don't drink water as they can't trust it. Instead, they draw blood from their animals and distill it.
Though on special occasions they will drink it straight from the animal.

There is no desert society in AElit. Well, I guess there could be a society of the dead? 🤔 The people who handle the dead no longer go into the desert for burials; when they did, they carried temporary shelters and provisions--just enough for the job.
