...and neither do I, so I'm posting this for #MosaicMonday

It's a stop-motion video showing the construction of a copy of the Villaquejida octopus. It's the archaeological equivalent of a cat video.

The corner of the hall reveals a lavish perspective of columns and aediculae in lush colours on the side wall. Lost amid missing tesserae is a female face, probably connected to the purple and white cloth spilling over the architrave. More to show for next #MosaicMonday.

DETAIL OF THE CORNER AND SIDE WALL. HALL OF THE GREAT MOSAIC, 64-98 CE.

A view of the corner of the subterranean hall, showing the mosaic decoration continuing onto the side wall. The surviving artwork displays a lavish, deeply illusionistic perspective of architectural elements, including fluted columns, ornate cornices, and aediculae rendered in lush colours of deep red, blue, and gold. Large areas of the original tesserae are missing, exposing the rough mortar and ancient brickwork beneath. Isolated in the middle of one such missing area is a small, finely detailed female face. She is probably connected to a dramatic cascade of purple and white cloth that is seen spilling over the richly decorated architrave directly below her. This corner section powerfully reinforces the immersive, three-dimensional quality of the fictive architecture. This magnificent artwork still keeps its secrets, but holds more discoveries for the future.

For #MosaicMonday, a colossal discovery. This is the Great #Mosaic, which I visited last Tuesday beneath the #BathsofTrajan in #Rome. Though fragmentary, this wall mosaic almost defies comprehension due to its quality and vastness. Let's have a look. #AncientBluesky 🏺🧵

HALL OF THE GREAT MOSAIC, 64-98 CE. MUSEO DELLE TERME DI TRAIANO

A steep downward perspective into a subterranean space beneath heavy brick vaulting. A vast vertical wall dominates the centre, covered in the remains of a monumental mosaic. This hall measures 10 by 15 metres and is 12 metres tall. The ground level has not yet been excavated, and the lower three metres, still buried, were originally faced with marble slabs. At the centre of the long wall, part of a rectangular niche is visible, which must once have contained a statue. It is far too large to be part of a private domus and is built on lands expropriated by Nero for the Domus Aurea, whose main Oppian pavilion is nearby. The gigantic size and high quality of the surviving mosaic suggest an imperial commission, but of what? And was it a Neronian building or a Flavian or Domitianic one? At the very bottom right edge, a modern blue metal railing provides a sense of the staggering scale.

For this week's #MosaicMonday & AI post, have just put today's mosaic on X and the option to 'generate with Grok' came up when I clicked to upload the photo. Haven't explored that but shudder to think what it is. Anyone know?

For this #MosaicMonday, the dolphins and cantharus at Bradford on Avon some years ago; now covered over. Apologies for oblique pic. Any blurring is because of the excitement of seeing the excavation.😉🐬 1/3

An oblique view of a colourful Roman mosaic in a straight-sided apse. In the centre is a cantharus/crater with its base to the right and mouth to the left in this photo. It is flanked by dolphins whose heads point towards the corners of the apse and whose tails are on level with the cantharus/crater handle.

Figure symbolising Winter, with hood, cloak and dead hare, from a mosaic (part geometric, part figurative) in Chedworth villa's west range. The room was probably used for dining (triclinium), although too small for major functions.

Spectacular Roman octopus mosaic from the floor of the women’s changing room at the Central Baths in ancient Herculaneum.

📷 by me

#MosaicMonday
#Archaeology

My photo shows a monochrome Roman floor mosaic depicting an octopus. The octopus is composed of small black tesserae (tiles) and has eight writhing arms with suckers and narrow curling tips. It is set against a white tesserae background. This octopus detail comes from a monochrome marine mosaic featuring Triton with a cherub and various sea creatures which include the octopus, dolphins and a cuttlefish. From the floor of the women's changing room at the Central Baths in Herculaneum.
