While I have side characters hide secrets like kidnapping, world domination, etc, my main characters are ALWAYS hiding insecurities.

For example, they'll act all cool and confident but inside they're total wrecks with terrible self esteem who need a hug!

Seymour has too much baggage to keep secrets. He is extremely cagey about discussing his past. It’s not secret, just ugly and he doesn’t like thinking about it.

A nice sorta-secret is his bisexuality. He’s out, but has some imposter syndrome about it, so he often keeps it quiet.

Danny spoke softly. He was a snack today, a little dressier than usual in a blue button down shirt and pale linen pants, radiating quiet authority and competence.

I talked him into buying a wool rancher-style hat, dark gray with a lighter ribbon around the crown and a matching band along the edge of the brim. He insisted on wearing it at a “jaunty” angle; it was adorably dorky. I liked seeing him in something I’d chosen for him. My man. At least for now.

“Hey.” I stood up. I had very studiously been trying to not look at Nykky since day one of rehearsal, but now she turned a little on her heel, like she was inviting me to look, and I gave up. Her hair was in a high ponytail, not a style I remembered seeing her in, but it called out her cheekbones—not that they needed the help. She’d touched up her makeup, done something to her eyes that made them pop even more than usual, and her dark red lipstick brought out the warm tones of her skin. She’d draped a denim vest over a black crop top, showing off the dangerous serpents coiling around the sleek muscles of her arms. She wore cutoffs and kitten heel sandals with straps that wrapped around her ankles. Her toenails were red too, but not matchy-matchy. Her big black slouchy purse hung nearly to her waist. She’d had it as long as I’d known her, and you could fit a small microwave in it, probably.
I said the second thing to hit my brain, which was, “You look like a rock’n’roll Barbie.”
“Fuck you,” she said, but through a laugh.
“No,” I spread my hands helplessly. “Like, iconic.”
“Barbie would be blonde,” she said. “And skinny. Barbie would not have ink.”
“Good point. You look much better than a rock’n’roll Barbie.”
