This is a wasp. Specifically a sawfly larva, Diprion pini I think. I love sawflies like this because they really challenge what people think of as a "wasp". Beautiful animal.

The first Devil's Fingers (Clathrus archeri) are pushing up from the underworld beneath Rye, East Sussex. And, yes, they really are that colour.
