They already exiled her to the neutral zone or thereabouts and were probably trying to kill her, so what could she lose more?

The economic aspect is fascinating. I think there are parallels today where, say, Russia and North Korea are in cooperation with Iran on munitions and planning, etc. #TrekBookClub #MyEnemyMyAlly
Uh-Oh they're at it again! Good foreshadowing of this event. #TrekBookClub #MyEnemyMyAlly
We later learn that Bones is an accomplished chess player. Who would have thought? #TrekBookClub #MyEnemyMyAlly
My favorite Romulan stories were the 2 TOS episodes, "Balance of Terror" and "The Enterprise Incident". When it comes to '90s Trek, I like Vreenak & DS9's "In the Pale Moonlight" as well as TNG's "Unification" and "The Defector".

I like the Romulans--especially the fact that they from the same lineage as Vulcans yet very different. I liked the Romulan eps from TNG (The Neutral Zone, The Enemy, Face of the Enemy) I liked Cretak in DS9. #trekbookclub #startrekmyenemymyally
19c. Just a reminder of Simon and Schuster’s September Trek e-book sale (at least in the US). There is something for everyone.

I really liked the Romulan commander from "The Enterprise Incident". It's a shame we only saw her once. As for Ael--while she's unhappy w/her niece's fate, I think she realizes Kirk & co. did what they had to as soldiers. I feel that her niece would as well. #trekbookclub #startrekmyenemymyally

Knowing how personal a mind-meld is, it says a lot that she trusts him enough to agree. Yes, she has to prove she's telling the truth, but Spock is going to learn more. He's going to learn about the type of person she is, and she'll learn the same about him. #trekbookclub #startrekmyenemymyally

19a. The Romulans were one of the Federation’s earliest adversaries, starting with TOS’ “Balance of Terror”. What do you think of them & their contributions to the franchise? What were some of your favorite Romulan episodes and characters?

Interesting both McCoy & Spock are against the plan but for different reasons. McCoy thinks it's insane; Spock thinks it is a good plan, but far too many things could go wrong. You have McCoy's emotional knee jerk reaction and Spock's thought out, logical one. #trekbookclub #startrekmyenemymyally
"The Enterprise Incident" is one of my favorite TOS episodes. The Romulan Commander was a memorable character. I felt sorry for her by the end since she would be severely punished for what happened. The fact Ael trusted Kirk after what happened to her niece was interesting.

I think Ael learned more about Spock, Kirk and McCoy and feel she made the right choice in going to them for help. Spock also discovers that Ael was telling the truth and that she was acting in the best interests of her people.

She’s roughly the age Kirk was when he “betrayed” the Federation by stealing the Enterprise to go save Spock. Middle age brings a reassessment of priorities. #TrekBookClub
Whenever I read about a superweapon like this I always wonder if it would work against the Borg. The galaxy’s most dangerous foe haunts my imagination. #TrekBookClub
I like the note that the Romulan Commander from The Enterprise Incident is not dead but missing, vanished into exile, gone to who knows where. Sounds like a spinoff series to me. #TrekBookClub
One of my favorite aspects of TOS were the discussions btwn Kirk, Spock & McCoy (or at least 2 of the 3). Spock provided the logical arguments, McCoy focused more on the emotional & Kirk was in the middle, deciding what was the best course of action, based on all the feedback he had.

I think she was being honorable. She saw what could happen if the experiments were successful & decided to take action. Also, the fact that Romulan command was willing to sacrifice her and her crew left her with the impression that her loyalty to central command wasn't deserved.

Something like this would tip the balance of power in the Alpha Quadrant if it was successful towards the Romulans. It's also a power which I don't think the Federation has had success dealing with (e.g. the Talosians in "The Cage").
