How much rigidity does a #system need to preserve its form …

and how many degrees of #freedom to adapt before it becomes only the skeleton of what it once was?

Perhaps survival is exactly this: preserving #structure without freezing #adaptability.

English - Image description A skeleton holds a red balloon-an amusing yet surprisingly precise image of a fundamental problem in complex systems. The conventional instinct says that more structure, control, and stability are always better; BenchEWS challenges exactly this assumption by asking when order turns into rigidity and a system loses the degrees of freedom required for learning, adaptation, and self-correction. Systems do not survive through maximum order, but through a dynamic balance between structure and freedom. Structure in the dough

#food #cooking #baking #bread #yeast #structure #gluten

Dough that's just been tipped out of the bowl in which it had risen. Spread on the worktop, the underside exposed shows a network of strands, filaments that are the developed structure in the dough that will hold the gas given off by the yeast to create the crumb of the loaf.
