In Greek myth, the prophet Cassandra isn't deaf, but her story revolves around a devastating failure of communication: she can speak the truth, yet Apollo's curse ensures nobody believes her. Being heard and being listened to, mythology reminds us, are very different things. #MythologyMonday

The Greek goddess Hestia is defined partly by what she does not do. While Olympus erupts with arguments, seductions and wars, she remains associated with the quiet hearth at the center of the home. Sometimes mythology gives enormous power to stillness. #MythologyMonday

In Greek mythology, Midas was punished by Apollo with donkey's ears after judging Pan's music superior. His barber discovered the secret, whispered it into a hole, and reeds later repeated it aloud. Apparently even the earth couldn't keep royal gossip quiet. #MythologyMonday

In Blackfoot myth, a deaf orphan boy runs after his tribe after they move away and leave him behind. While he runs, his ears pop, and a worm-like substance oozes out. He can suddenly hear, and later proves his worth to his tribe by capturing horses and teaching people to ride them. #MythologyMonday

According to the Poetic Edda, the Norse god Heimdall sacrifices his hearing in one ear for exceptional hearing in the other. After making this exchange at the sacred spring Mímisbrunnr, he can hear grass growing from the ground and wool growing on sheep. #MythologyMonday
