#Sharks respond to low frequency pulsed sounds but are presumed to lack the capacity to detect these sounds beyond the acoustic near field, where particle motion dominates.

Orientation of Blacktip Sharks to Underwater #Sound
Sullivan et al
doi.org/10.1093/iob/...

#science #marinebiology

Fig. 1
Representation of the acoustic fields. The sound travels from the source in circulating and propagating waves as a hydrodynamic flow dominated by particle motion (near field). As the sound travels beyond three wavelengths from the source, it consists of only propagating waves being dominated by pressure waves (far field). At that distance the sound pressure waves must be transduced, typically by a gas-filled-organ, to stimulate the hair cells of the inner ear to be detected.

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen!

On September 26th, 2026, at 1:00 PM in The Open Book in The Village at Topanga, The Persaud Foundation will be hosting our Oceanic Literacy Day! We will be having an oceanic storytime for children at 1:00 PM with the book "Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean's Most Fearless Scientist", by Jess Keating, & we will be going over some intriguing things about some of the oceans most misrepresented animals, sharks! We will be handing out Stickers, Pins, & Shark Education Fact Cards while supplies last!

If you decide to purchase any books & mention our nonprofit, 20% of your purchase will be donated to us.

This event is completely free. Whether you're a marine enthusiast or just curious about the underwater world, this event is perfect for all ages & families.

Learn about marine conservation, discover fascinating facts about ocean life, and get inspired to protect our seas for future generations.

Have a whale of a time at The Open Book, Topanga. See you there!

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen! In collaboration with our brilliant Social Media Volunteers, we created a series of informational graphics on sustainable fisheries. Our final graphic focuses on some of the ways that YOU can be sustainable in your diet when it comes to seafood.

One of the ways to do your part in creating the push for sustainable seafood practices in fisheries is to be more sustainable in your diet. One way to do this is to shop locally in order to support your local businesses and the communities they support. Shopping locally also helps you develop a relationship with local fish mongers, allowing for more traceability. It is important to ensure the products you purchase are traceable, meaning you know where the fish was sourced from. There are several resources for this such as friendofthesea.com and Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch. These websites are great resources that list out products that offer sustainably sourced seafood and companies that are contributing to marine conservation.

Another factor to be mindful of when attempting to stay on a sustainable seafood diet is to avoid overfished species. To stay informed, doing research on websites by organizations such as NOAA Fisheries and World Wildlife Fund can keep you updated on the fish that are at risk. Purchasing products that are MSC or ASC approved is also a more convenient way to ensure that the products are sustainable. Both organizations set the standard on making sure that the fisheries are leaving enough fish in the water and ensuring that the fish farms are protecting the environment, treating the fish well, and supporting local workers.
