Excerpt from SmokeWIP, a sage Owen romance novel wip. Text as follows: Matthew swallowed a familiar jolt as he pulled into the parking lot and saw the Sierra. Another frisson of nameless, overwhelming sensation at Cory leaned casually on the tailgate, elbow hooked back, scrolling on his phone, a cigarette dangling between his lips. He didn't know he smoked. "Hey." He greeted when he got out of his truck. Cory gave him a dry look somewhere between baleful and pitying. "Thanks for meeting me." "Yeah, well." It was a classic Mercer refrain, a shorthand for it is what it is and what else was I supposed to do and I don't know how to respond to that so let's keep it moving and maybe even a little go fuck yourself for flavor. Smoke curled up out of his mouth like a waterfall. This was no former athlete, only child of medical professionals. "I've only got an hour."

Why’d you leave your bed in the middle of the night?” I put my teacup down too loudly, unrepentant. “’Cause there was a hot girl down the hall. I was in Rochelle’s bed instead. Get over it.” Rochelle didn’t blush or react with her face, still slowly coming to wakefulness at the table beside me, but she put her arm around me to back me up. I cast my gaze around the table, meeting each pair of eyes once. “We’re together.” Ari let out their breath. “Well I’m glad one of you finally said it.” “What they said,” added Bauer. “If you thought you were being slick, you weren’t.”

"We just took a walk to smoke some weed. Don't make it weird." "I'll try not to eyefuck you the rest of the night." Fingers gripped Matthew's jaw, held him unnecessarily for another kiss. "But if you don't want people to know, we shouldn't return together. I must look like I just got fucked senseless." A hand snuck down his front. "And you look like you need to be." He couldn't stop the moan completely, but kept it brief. "Touching it isn't helping." He was forward, flirty in a way Matthew had never seen Billy. "Can't blame me for wanting to keep touching you. Could our weed walk take a little longer, you think?" "Absolutely not." He didn't know where the line was between sneaking drugs and assignations, but he couldn't believe Billy's stupid cousin was horny enough to be cavalier about it. "If you're sure." He sounded peaceful. "Then I'll just say thank you." Winkingly, he added, "Owe you one." "Go." When he was alone he slouched against the tree, fished in his pocket, dry-swallowed a pill, closed his eyes, breathed through his nose until all he could smell was spring.

How can I suddenly understand him? Its difficult to stop myself from shaking. The man takes his finger again, brushes along the underside of the knife, slow and taunting. I watch in horror as the evocation symbol carved into the handle is sanded off. One by one, each knife clatters to the floor at the man’s bare feet.
