In 1842 the Eng. word dinosaur,
from the Gk. deinos ‘fearsome’+ sauros ‘lizard', was invented by palaeontologist Richard Owen. Intended to describe Victorian discoveries of fossil reptiles, the word came to include every beast once identified as 'dragon'. The association continues... #WyrdWednesday

New Zealand's tuatara looks like a lizard but belongs to a different reptile lineage, Rhynchocephalia. Its relatives flourished alongside dinosaurs. Today, the tuatara is the sole surviving representative of that ancient order. One very old branch of the family tree remains. #WyrdWednesday

The Wollemi pine was known to science only after a park ranger found living trees in an isolated Australian gorge in 1994. Its broader lineage stretches deep into the fossil record. Sometimes a "lost world" is not an island of dinosaurs. It's a grove nobody noticed. #WyrdWednesday

From Germanic lore, the wyrm was a great serpent or dragon, haunting tales from Beowulf to Tolkien’s Smaug.
Before dragons breathed fire, there were wyrms. 🐲

In many Indigenous traditions of the Plains, Pacific Northwest & Great Lakes, the mighty #Thunderbird commands the skies. Its wings bring thunder, its eyes flash lightning, and it battles great water serpents. A powerful bringer of storms & rain. 🌩️

The snoligoster is a fearsome critter of American tall tales that dwells in the swamps of the American south, especially around Lake Okeechobee. It resembles a legless furry alligator with a back spike and a propellor tail. Victims are stored on the spike until the monster is hungry.

In 1938, a living coelacanth was hauled from the sea off South Africa. The group had been known from fossils and was thought to have vanished around the end of the Cretaceous. Then one arrived at a fish market, proving "known only from fossils" isn't always the end. #WyrdWednesday
