DAMN THIRSTY
First
The fish needs to say,
"Something ain't right about this
Camel ride-
And I'm
Feeling so damn
Thirsty."

The Poetry
Was it beaten into me or out
of me? The ur question, always doubt.

Never certainty, never sure the song
is on the right track. I've got it wrong

só often, failure is a true friend

of my long night's journey into day.
My gibbering ghosts must have their say:

Mother, Teacher, Lost Child, will not cease until dawn breaks through in brutal peace.

Paula Meehan from her pamphlet, “Ten Poems from Ireland,” Candlewick Press, 2016.

happy #smallpoemsunday! 💜

feel free to share small poems you wrote or ones you love by other poets :)

here’s one from my first book, Light-Up Swan (@ornithopterpress.bsky.social 2021)~

LAVENDER TOWN

You tell me a spell to get the ghosts
off my back. It works for a while.

Every laundromat in town is hidden
by signs that say closed, moved, new

location. To be warm and clean and
have time for song is a big secret.

Be careful / not to look at it too long.

David Gascoyne

September Sun

Magnificent strong sun! in these last days
So prodigally generous of pristine light That's wasted only by men's sight who will not see
And by self-darkened spirits from whose night
Can rise no longer orison or praise:

Let us consume in fire unfed like yours And may the quickened gold within me come
To mintage in due season, and not be Transmuted to no better end than dumb
And self-sufficient usury. These days and years

May bring the sudden call to harvesting,
When if the fields Man labours only yield
Glitter and husks, then with an angrier sun may He
Who first with His gold seed the sightless field
Of Chaos planted, all our trash to cinders bring.

Lost Couplet

When I die, let my body be donated to silence.
The final noise: when I'm clothed in ground.

Sparrows asleep inside a glass violin.
Bells with their throats cut.

The song went: plenty, plenty. I've plenty of bones.

This poem hasn't had much success in finding a publication home, but I like it, so I decided to share it. My little ode to stability, consistency, meeting each other's needs - the unsexy, underrated relationship heroes. You can have it for #SmallPoemSunday, you lucky bunch.
