Obviously, when we learned that there was a book festival dedicated to history, Kate had to go check it out. The hardest part was choosing which panels to attend. Read her report here:

#Skystorians! Any particular reason someone called William Herris preaching in 1545 would be given the epithet Long Beard ('lingam barbam') apart from because of his physical description? Did it, e.g., signify a wandering friar or simply someone slightly unusual in that they weren't clean-shaven? TY

In accordance with good tradition, I hereby have to highlight my regular topics posted to the blue skies: #bookhistory news, #skystorians stuff, and a few jokes about using AI from private companies that stole it all.

I think @dbellingradt.bsky.social's final diary entry post is the first from a #skystorians account to make it into the Bluesky trends.
He's probably thinking:
"What's going on here?"
AND:
"Why not my #bookhistory posts?"

How do we write histories of small towns in the post-1945 period? Towns such as Halifax in the Calder Valley feature little in an otherwise thriving historiography of contemporary Britain. Yet for an earlier generation of social historian, most notably E. P. Thompson, who wrote The Making of the English Working Class while living there, such towns were crucial to understanding the processes of industrialisation and capitalist modernity. How can we include such places in more purposeful narratives of the more recent past? How do we write inclusive histories of belonging for the residents of these towns that do not consign them to being ‘left behind’, as though their histories are only considered to explain their ‘unmaking’ and marginalisation: towards an overdetermined present of post-Brexit Britain, flags and Reform?

#OTD in 1944, Pvt. Masao Kuroki and Eugenie Sperling tried to obtain a marriage license in Seattle. The two met in Minnesota while Kuroki trained at Camp Savage. Sperling's mother disapproved saying, "I told her not to, but she did it, anyway. A white man-yes. But not a Jap."

"Spokane Girl, Jap-American Soldier Try To Wed Here"
A Japanese-American soldier in the United States Army and a 19-vear-old white girl applied yesterday for a license to marry here and today the girl's mother told The Times her daughter had defied her mother's wishes to come to Seattle from Spokane for the ceremony. The girl is Eugenie Sperling of Spokane. Her husband-to-be is Pvt. Masao Kuroki, 24, of Idaho, who met and wooed her while he was training in a Minnesota Army camp and she was living in Minneapolis. A cleark of the marriage-license bureau said the couple applied for a waiver of the statutory three-day waiting period before receiving a license, but that Presiding Judge Clay Allen, after talking to them about 20 minutes, refused to grant it.
The Seattle Times, October 6, 1944"Believed to Be in City"
The couple were believed to be in Seattle today. The girl's mother, Mrs. Anna Sperling, a forewoman in a Spokane laundry, said the couple have no friends or relatives in Seattle, so far as she knows. Mrs. Sperling said she has never met Kurochi. "I don't approve at all," Mrs. Sperling said of the projected marriage. "I don't want to have anything to do with it.
"My daughter met this man in Minneapolis–I came out to Spokane from there a year ago and didn't know anything about it. My daughter came to Spokane about three months ago.
"Then the other day Eugenie got a telegram from his, asking her to go to the West Coast to get married.
"'I Told Her Not To'"
"I told her not to, but she did it, anyway. A white man-yes But not a Jap. I won't gave anything to do with it." Mrs. Sperling said she believed her daughter's fiance expects to be sent overseas soon, The Spokane woman said she has five daughters, and two sons and that one of her sons is in the Navy. The other lives in Spokane. Her husband, William, she said is an old-age pensioner in Minneapolis where he formerly worked in a foundry. Eugenie attended high school in Minneapolis, Mrs. Sperling said."
