September 28, 1538:

Hayreddin Barbarossa’s Ottoman fleet faced Andrea Doria’s Holy-League fleet off Preveza. This victory secured Ottoman naval dominance in the eastern Mediterranean for the next 33 years. The Ottoman fleet consisted of 122 rowing vessels (galleys and galleons), while the Holy League fleet comprised more than 600 vessels (galleys, galleons, sailing ships). There is some variation in the sources, particularly regarding the League's ship numbers. I've taken these numbers from the Ottoman naval historian Katib Celebi's (d. 1657) Tuhfet el-kibar fi asfar el-bihar ("The Gift to Dignitaries Concerning Naval Warfare") which covers the history of Ottoman naval warfare up to the mid-17th century. The Holy League was an alliance of naval forces from Venice, Spain, the Papal States, Genoa, Maltese Knights, and the Duchy of Mantua. The Ottoman fleet incorporated experienced North African corsair personnel, particularly those associated with Algiers. Image credit:

Spotted a wooden disk with three holes on a sailing wreck? That's a deadeye—used for tensioning lines in the rigging. Stop guessing on your dives: zurl.co/lc6zp #TallShips #WreckDiving #MaritimeHistory

Cervantes’s personal captivity at the hands of Algerian privateers forms the background to “The Generous Lover,” but the story is fiction rather than autobiography.
You can find this story in his "Novelas Ejemplares" (Exemplary Stories) first published in 1613.
